Turmoil from change as CIA tries to adjust to Goss

WASHINGTON -- When former CIA Director George Tenet said his farewells at a two-hour ceremony this summer, a deputy noted that 40 percent of the agency's staff had worked for just one chief.

It was a symbol of Tenet's endurance, seven years on the job, the second longest tenure of a director. It also was a mark of agency's growth during a hiring spree that began in 1998 and accelerated after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

With Tenet's successor, former Rep. Porter Goss, in charge and making changes, one of the longer periods of leadership stability in the CIA's 57-year history is ending.

In an e-mail this month, Goss told employees of his plans for new procedures, organization and senior personnel. He reminded them that the CIA is a "secret agency," indirectly addressing media leaks widely believed to have angered the White House. Goss also said he intends to clarify "beyond doubt the rules of the road."

At least five top officials already have left the CIA since Goss took over.

I never understood why Tenet was allowed to keep his job. Pray for the success of Goss.

A media attempt to show mass turmoil at an agency that needed shakeup years ago -still, a tempest in a teapot compared to a real WAR on terror.

> I never understood why Tenet was allowed to keep his job.

It seems that for some reason, Bush initially trusted
Tenet. Tenet, you'll recall was the one who told Bush
n the eve of the war that WMDs in Iraq was a "slam dunk".
Was it a set-up, or mere incompetence?

Meanwhile, when the AP describes the current CIA
fummigation with words like "turmoil", "purge",
"partisan", "embroiled", "Not all were happy partings",
and seeks out quotes supporting that posture,
then I guess I have no complaints.

Sure, the media will make the most of it, but people in general are not that concerned. Bush has evidently decided to do the smart thing, which is to get this stuff done early, get it done quickly, and get it all done at once, rather than trickling it out. There's really not much the media can do about it.

If you need to do something unpleasant, always do it thoroughly and fast. If you decide to do something nice, ladle it out a little at a time. Those are the rules according to Machiavelli.

They worry that the Florida Republican who led the House Intelligence Committee until August is bringing a partisan background to an agency that traditionally has tried to avoid politics.

Bwahahaha.

I thought it was a mistake for Bush to keep any Clinton appointees, especially Tennet, but then he didn't ask me, lol!!!!

I don't know what your reply means, but my reaction to the part about "a agency that traditionally has tried to avoid politics" is, that's a bunch of crap!

Interesting parallel --- what Goss is doing to the CIA, the DNC should be doing to their leadership...but they are not competent enough to figure that out...
