There's a good book on the subject, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. Written in the 1800s, it's still true today. A kind of temporary insanity happens when any commodity starts rising rapidly.

durasell recommended reading "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds."
It was written in 1841 by Charles MacKay, Bernard Baruch once said the first 3 chapters saved him the price of the book many times over in 1929. Tulipmania was my favorite chapter.
