I would put money on the fact that every one of the hunters were hunting with a firearm that was more powerful than the 7.62X39 cartridge that the SKS shoots.

No doubt. But to the gun-banners, 'powerful' is how many rounds the gun holds. Just like, 'assualt weapon' is any weapon other than a single shot.
