JACKSON, Miss. Federal appeals Judge Charles Pickering could learn soon whether he'll be confirmed for his seat on the Fifth U-S Circuit Court of Appeals.
If the Senate doesn't confirm Pickering before it adjourns next month, he'll be forced to retire from the Fifth Circuit Court in New Orleans. He currently fills the seat under a recess appointment from President Bush.
The Senate has confirmed 204 of the president's judicial nominees. There are 22 nominations pending, including Pickering's.
But Pickering's confirmation has been doubtful. Senate Democrats have threatened a filibuster against Pickering's confirmation. They accuse him of supporting segregation as a young man and promoting anti-abortion and anti-voting rights views as a state lawmaker.
Pickering has denied the accusations. Republicans accuse Democrats of religious prejudice against Bush's anti-abortion nominees.
The Fifth Circuit includes Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Time to put the squeeze on Landrieu (so to speak).
Could the same person receive a recess re-appointment?
"Yes if that person wanted to work for nothing...."
Why? Are they not covered by minimum wage laws? Seriously, I was under the impression that the recess appointees still get paid, but do not get raises or something to that effect.
Which Democrats could we count on to support an up-or-down floor vote? Does anyone know?
Why? Are they not covered by minimum wage laws?
The DUmmies may even not filibuster again, after all it was a Dasshole technique in the first place, he sure got his due(thank you Lord).
I'm not sure, but he could get a reappointment in the next Congress where Republicans will have 55 votes. It will be much harder for DemocRATS to filibuster in the next Congress especially against judicial nominees, because of the increased strength of the Republicans in the Senate and the rule changes Republicans will enact at the beginning of the term.
That was my thought. He might have to leave the court for a month or so, but there will be a larger majority in the next session of congress.
Filthy hypocrites. Their elder statesman is a Klansman, but they have the stones to go after Pickering, and the MSM makes nary a peep about it.
He got a bad wrap about the descision lowering the sentence of the only adult sentenced in a racially motivated murder. The ring leader was a juvenile and got a lighter sentence. Neal Boortz thoroughly described the situation on his radio show.
