Lost Veterans Find Home
The Washington Times ^ | November 26, 2004 | Denise Barnes

Staff writer Denise Barnes interviewed Nanci Jewell, D.C. metro director of U.S. VETS.

Question: What is your group's mission? Answer: Our sole mission is the reintegration of homeless veterans back into mainstream society. I think, organizationally, our philosophy is really that each veteran is unique, their situations are unique and the amount of time it is going to take them to reintegrate is unique. Some veterans are fine in six months; others with more serious problems — those who have been on the streets for a long time — will require more support and their reintegration may be more difficult. At Ignatia House, because of our location, limited funding and lack of a clinical staff, we accept veterans who are at the high end of the recovery process.

Nanci Jewell is my sister. If anyone wants to help out our Vets, make a donation, or find another way to help these guys out, remembering that they fought for us, kindly keep Ignatia House in mind. Thanks.

From the story

>>>> Q: How many homeless veterans are in the District?
A: In the District, I would say between 1,200 and 1,600, and that's just in the city. If you
include the D.C./Baltimore area, it's about 6,500. <<<<

BULL!

What does your sister do to conform these people were in the service? Check DD214s?
I have been a commander of a American Legion post and have worked with many vets with problems. And found for the most part that the hordes of homeless vets is a myth.
Most so called vets claming to be down on there luck and out on the street are panhandlers & scam artists. And have never been in uniform.
Just like those 30 year old “Vietnam vet” out on the street collecting money. If anybody says there a Vietnam vet and there under 50 there BS ing you.

I just checked. They do check DD-214's. They only help people who were honorably discharged. They need many things there.... including furniture, kitchen stuff...all sorts of stuff. They have office things, but things to make the place more comfortable are still needed. They are getting my old set of dishes, (for only 6, but anything helps) and several pans for cooking.

I suspect the numbers are high too, but the house only holds max 36 anyway, and they are doing a good job.
