Help Question On: Spyware & Parasite Blockers
11-25-2004 | FrankRepublican

Posted on 11/25/2004 10:32:44 AM PST by FrankRepublican

Does anyone know a good tool to get rid of and block spyware, parasites, adware, viruses and other crap. I think Drudge has it on his web site. I surf but not a huge amount but the crap is getting too much.

These advertising parasites also come as worms, viruses, trohans etc.

I have tried free AdAware 6.0, free Spybot and the latest is the Giant AntiSpyware on a free trial. Giant seems the best but a lot of crap is still there.

I also run Norton (worthless on most of this stuff), Solo (great AV program) plus have used free Panada and AVG in the past.

The Internet is rapidly becoming a waste of time for me. I tried to stick to mainly newsweb sites and links off Drudge. I am thinking of switching to Mozilla's browser as MSFT IE appears to be crap.

Help. Any suggestion appreciated. Also let's give thanks to American trrops protecting us on this day.

I have been using Webroot's Spy Sweeper. Seems to do the job.

I just had to pay $220 to have three trojans and a klez virus removed from my computer. I've given up on Drudge due to the crap he allows to be inflicted on us. Conventional advertising is one thing, but these smart-a$$ advertisers are intentionally attempting to infect our machines.

Spybot Search and Destroy v1.3, and
SpywareBlaster v3.2

Both are free for personal use and easy to find.

Make sure you use the immunize features to prevent reinfection.

Thanks and keep the suggestions coming.

I think Drudge is allowing this crap to get on my machine. It makes me sad to have to avoid his site now. He pissed me off on election day when he started posting the exit polls without heavy disclaimers that Kerry's people we posting bogus exit polls. They were trying to supress Repub voters like the Florida panhandle early call fiasco in 2000 to try to help Gore.

Two things. First is SpyBot search and destroy and the other is Ad Aware from LavaSoft. Both are free and very well developed. Please give to the developers of SpyBot since that is how they make their living. Just google them install and off you go.

The other thing is to switch to Linux. :-)

Seriesly (sic), how do you know it is still there. I've been trusting AdAware to get everything, am I wrong?

I use McAfee, Adware, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Trojan Hunter.

Together they keep my computer free of all bugs (so far).

I use PestPatrol http://www.pestpatrol.com and set it up to scan automatically when I start the system. It keeps things pretty clean but it isn't free.

SpywareBlaster keeps garbage from reaching your browser... it's preventive. Also, you don't mention what firewall you're using. If you don't have one, get the free Zone Alarm.

Try Ad-Adware SE. Its the best I've found so far. Finds 100x more crap hidden on your computer than XSOFT for which I paid for :-(.

Are you using AdAware pay version. I am using 6.0 and the freebie.

I will pay if it works. I used AdAware 6.0 (free version) but I was still getting junk. Maybe the pay version blocks the stuff.

I am just trying to get help and not trying to bash anyone or any software. This paarsite/adware/spyware is out of control. Thanks for any help.

Spy Sweeper works well for me.
Also, stay away from the Drudge site. Pop-up city, and all the spyware known to man.
I finally took Drudge off my bookmarks so I wouldn't accidently go there.

I have a hardware firewall.

I agree that Zone Alarm freebie is the best free firewall. Worth paying $29 or so for the pay version because it is A1.

You can also use HijackThis for when your homepage is hijacked.

Personally I use either Opera or Firefox when surfing beyond the FR realm.

Again, unless you are having performance problems, how do you know that AdAware, let's say, is not working 100% effectively? How would I know I need something better?
