Back in the seventies I was subjected to EXTREME pressure to contribute to the United Way. They (management) wanted 100% of their employees involved. They got a special plaque if they did.

The UW must have had a lot of clout back then. In 1970 I was in the Army in Germany. The battalion had a drive to get 100% participation. I refused to participate. One month later I and three other non-contributors had orders for 'Nam. We were out of the battalion before the end of the UW drive. The old man got his 100% participation.

Upon return to civilian life, I worked for a company that had the same drive. This time I participated. I received four promotions and nearly quadrupled my income in five years.

I don't think the UW is that big anymore, though.

I think you're right. I was called into the office of the "Head Cheese".
I was pretty intimidated, but I didn't back down because they were giving
tons of loot to the homosexuals and drug addicts with AIDS in Baltimore.
I felt they made their beds they could lie in them.
