Quite the menagerie you have! I'd like to have a dog, but my cats are older and I doubt they would adjust.

In my experience, they all adjust. But one must have a strong hand. In other words, "if you don't accept this cat/dog/gerbit/rabbit/ I am going to beat the s**t out of you. Amazingly they come around. And I never have to carry out my threat, just yell at them that I will. I have never beaten a dog or any animal but I have verbally threatened to. The react to that with positive thinking.

Actually, you have the upper hand if you want to have a dog. It is much more difficult to introduce a cat than it is a dog. Believe me, the cats will not be threatened by a small puppy. A dog, on the other hand, may be outraged and take to dumping piles on your deck. (My experience)
