If I recall, Vang had already shot up all his ammo. This is probably the only thing that saved Gass's life.

Vang's statement in the court papers released this morning is that he emptied his gun into the victims, reloaded and emptied it again, then ran away and along the way decided to throw the rest of his ammo into a swamp.

Hardly the actions of someone so terrified that he didn't know the difference between right and wrong, is it?
