As they used say back on the farm..

Nuts.

Yes and no.

The terrorism threat is large, and they have a potential for a lot of damage, but a rebuilt Russian Empire would probably bring back the cold war.

We as a nation need to keep an eye on this. If it goes down like the Hungry riots did way back when, we will know the Bear is once again looking at western Europe.

"They can't keep a lid on their society as it was during the time of Stalin and the police state."

Technology is neither here nor there. Castro ruled Cuba by television (not my expression, just an apt one) as long as 40 years ago. The methods by which a state is put and kept under single party rule remain the same, just the tools vary.

"What should we support them with? Troops? This is not our problem. Let the Europeans deal with it."

They came when we called, we can do no less. If they need troops, we should deploy. It IS our problem on several levels, but the most important reason is our duty to our allies. As far as the Europeons, how is it their problem? what should/could they do?

"We should get back to what our founding fathers told us about foreign entanglements. If not now, when? Don't we have enough on our plate already?"

The genie is out of the bottle. This past century has required us to take on evil whereever it is. As to the "full plate", I'd have to be the one that tells our allies to take a number & wait. We should find a way.

"I don't like what I am seeing there but I don't like a lot of what goes on in the world. But we can't be everywhere trying to straighten out all the wrongs in the world. We had a vital interest in Iraq but we have no vital interests in Ukraine so far as I can tell."

One word: Honor.

"Soros is not always on the wrong side of the argument, especially when it comes to eastern Europe."

I agree, but don't expect the authoritarians among us to agree. Theirs is a black and white world. Once they label Soros evil, in their minds, thats it. His enemies will always be their friends, even if it means getting in bed with Russian gangsters.

VERY interesting.

As always, the resources of FReepers amaze me. I have enough trouble trying to sort out German/Belgian politics, and know nothing about the eastern countries.

I am trying to figure out who the "good guy" is here. By the sounds of it, I hope both could loose.

Still, Russian intervention worries me. To many old movies and old military people as friends I guess.

"He almost the sole source of funding for Yushchenko. I wonder what the price tag of that support will be--and what price America will pay to fix the mess Soros will inevitably make."

Excellent point, but I would argue about the relevance today. If Russian troops open fire on Ukrainian civilians the immediate priorities loom larger than any other consideration.

"If the intervention is to support Yushchenko, and succeeds in installing him in office, then the Ukrainians will need our help again after their economy craters."

I'm not going to argue against your points. I'm not sure that I disagree with you on those issues. I do disagree with their weight in the face of current events. It's kind of like asking a trauma victim in the ER for their insurance information before treatment.

So who's better? Putin's puppet or Soro's puppet? If it's the lesser of two evils, I'd certainly rather see the administration in power that wants to join NATO.

Left and rights of passion, black and whites of youth.
But who will face the knowledge that the truth is not the truth.
Obsolete. Absolute.

Oddly enough I have been humming this since I began reading the posts.

I'm not crazy about NATO anymore--it's becoming an increasingly anti-American alliance, IMNHO.

Putin is sometimes on our side. Soros never is.

Yushchenko was funded entirely by Soros.

The Europeans need to deal with this if it needs dealing with.

Why? The Ukrainians have helped us out in Iraq, do they not deserve the same support from the USA? Anyway, the US has the military and the economic muscle to scare off the Russians, the EU doesn't.

I don't see communism coming back in a Soviet Union.

Maybe not, but totalitarianism is coming back under good old Putin.

Besides we need Putin when he is fighting alongside us against Al Queda.

Yes, Russia is building a nuclear power plant for the Iranians. Al Qaeda will get their first A-bomb courtesy of Putin. What a great ally in the WOT he is.

Of course "the west" won't react. Putin is doing whatever he wants.

It's the Ukraine. It practically *IS* Russia.

Is there any proof of this? I doubt it very very much. Even if Soros did fund the opposition I'd still support him over Putin's fascist puppet.

Soros' major accomplishment has been stripping his coffers lately. He does not worry me now that he can no longer meddle in our affairs. I agree that the Ukrainians deserve the aid of our troops as they have heard our call, but as Ned Flanders would say, "This is a dilly of a pickle." Not exactly lose-lose, but somewhere close to that. The Ukrainians deserve their freedom as much as we do. They have already shown the are willing to fight for it. More power to them. Soros however is a non-issue.
