Bush Wins New Mexico by 5,988 Votes, Canvass Shows; Margin Less Than 1 Percentage Point

Three weeks after the general election, New Mexico's canvassing board officially declared President Bush the winner by 5,988 votes, or less than 1 percentage point.

The board certified the Nov. 2 election results Tuesday and said Bush received 376,930 votes, or 49.8 percent, to Democrat John Kerry's 370,942 votes, or 49 percent. Independent Ralph Nader received 4,053 votes, or 0.5 percent.

Four years ago, Democrat Al Gore defeated Bush in New Mexico by just 366 votes out of 598,605 cast.

Gov. Bill Richardson said in a statement that he would propose changes to state election law to speed up vote tabulations, including earlier processing of absentee ballots.

"As was the case four years ago, this year's presidential election was fiercely contested and one of the closest, if not the closest, in the nation," said Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron.

This was the first presidential election in New Mexico that used provisional ballots - about 18,000 statewide. They are counted after the election is over if they are found to be valid.

The margin of Bush's win in Iowa also was less than 1 percent in the unofficial tally. Iowa certifies its results next week.

New Mexico took 22 days to count the votes, a sparsely populated state. This was either a case of trying to manufacture extra votes, or the people who ran the election in New Mexico are inept.

I read a paper last year on the intelligence quotients of different races. Native American Indians are number one on the quotient. They have the highest intelligence ability.

I guess Richardson underestimated those 10,000 Navajos.

AS compared to the few hundred votes manufactured in 2000 that gave the state to albore.

First of all, Bobby Thompson proved that a 150 foot home run is as good as a 450 foot home run. Thompson's home run won the NY Giants the NL pennant in 1951. Second, Bill Richardson tried every trick in the book, legal or otherwise to deliver the state to John Kerry. Richardson owned all the strings and the marbles in New Mexico and still could swing the state to John "traitor" Kerry!!! A great win for GW Bush and the good guys!!!

Yeah, I was going to say that. Bush could have mounted rerererecount efforts in 2000 in New Mexico with only a hundred or so votes separating them. And as for this election and the media whores for the Demonrat party not wanting to call Ohio-they had no problem calling PA that had fewer votes seperating the two and not to mention the cr*p that goes on in Philadelphia and with Rendell threatening to not count military ballots.

Don't blame our election officials. It takes time to count 751,925 votes on your fingers and toes.

I hoped he would get an outright majority in NM but he fell a bit short. Oh well, a win is a win. :)

Last I heard GWB's margin in Iowa was something like 751,000 to 741,000. Officials said there was no chance Kerry would be able to overtake Bush. But the media are still reporting those unofficial numbers where Mr Bush's lead is a little larger, around 13K votes. Does anyone have the percentages on the final Iowa vote? I hope he gets over 50% there.

In most other states, Bush-Cheney got over 50%. I think this was better than Clinton's record in '96 but I will have to check.

Read Bill Sammon's book. At Any Cost.

It documents the bias of the media and their attempt to sway those who haven't voted yet.

"I think this was better than Clinton's record in '96 but I will have to check."

Bush got 50.02% in IA, which means that he got 50% or more in 30 states. In 1996, Clinton got 50% or more in only 18 states (plus DC, of course).
