So no "stretch" for a round to come in just as he's facing these guys down, and to come in in such a way as he's sure enough that it came from the guys confronting him that he's willing to shoot them down.

Most here seem to be going over to the "methodical" side from the "berserker" side, and with more than a little reason.

So the methodical ex-military guy who is cool under fire (and has time to duck) coincidentally gets a near-miss from someone unrelated to events in front of him but he thinks the guys shot at him so he picks them off?

I'd call that a "stretch", myself.
