Though I married into a conservative family, it's still no fun at family gatherings. No one talks politics, culture, religion or anything big --- they spend their time talking about people I don't know. They are very insular --- I've been married 15 years and I'm still an "outsider." So I spend my time in the game room with my nieces and nephews (teens and twenties) and we talk books, movies, music and such.

Needless to say most of my in-laws think I'm an idiot.

No need to fret about it.
Ordinary people talk about things.
More intelligent people talk about other people.

The most intelligent talk about ideas.
