Hundreds of people spent the night as evacuees in central and southeastern Texas because of flooding caused by days of torrential rain that was blamed for one death.
Rain continued falling in some areas Tuesday and the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for a 17-county region.
In Southern California, meanwhile, campers stranded by nearly 2 feet of snow on a mountain near Palm Springs were rescued early Tuesday.
Rain began falling on southeastern Texas on Saturday, and on Sunday up to 15 inches of rain fell across parts of Wharton and Jackson counties. Fifty to 100 homes and some businesses were flooded in El Campo.
On Monday, the Guadalupe River rose to more than 11 feet above flood stage in Sequin, east of San Antonio, flooding three subdivisions.
"I doubt anybody can get anything cleaned up" with Thanksgiving two days away, Seguin police Lt. Jim Boeck said.
High water blocked sections of Interstate 10 in the area, and one woman died in San Antonio when her vehicle was swept away as she tried to drive through a low-water crossing.
Rescue crews in New Braunfels removed 24 children from a day-care center surrounded by water. Flooding also shut down a large section of downtown New Braunfels for part of Monday.
A separate storm that arrived in Southern California during the weekend dumped up to 3 feet of snow in the mountains east of Los Angeles and piled flakes even on some desert areas.
About 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles, nearly 2 feet of snow stranded 10 campers on a a peak in the San Jacinto Mountains west of Palm Springs.
Crews using bulldozers and tractors reached the campers early Tuesday, said Sgt. Earl Quinata of the Riverside County sheriff's department. They were in good condition, he said.
Also in Riverside County, a 9-year-old boy was killed by a rock slide Saturday, and a man who tried to drive through a flooded wash in Palm Desert was pulled from his vehicle by a Riverside County swift-water rescue team.
Hundreds of Texas? Their is only one Texas.
their = there
We had a strong storm come thru Austin during the past hour. Quite a bit more rain. Reports of large (softball ?? - not confirmed) near IH 35 & Ben White area.
BTTT
Thanks for the ping Arrowhead.
I am in the business center of my apartment complex now. A lightning strike happened here a few minutes ago, and my ears are still ringing, and my hands are shaky --- but the power and phone lines didn't even blink. The alarm system went off though.
I talked to my wife in Lago Vista and she said it was pouring at home. I understand the LCRA closed the floodgates for not, to let the water south and east of Austin go down the river. We had lights blink several times in Central Austin. So far, nothing but rain. I think the worst is over.
You staying dry????
It's been raining, but not like where you are! We are in the tornado watch area, same as you. Are you still in a safe location?
I do have to get out today, not far though, but where I have to go is very close to the Trinity River, so I am waiting a bit to make sure the area is stable.
For now, the tornado watch is CXL. There was one cell that the weather service was worried about, because it had a circular rotation within the cell. That cell collapsed with the heavy rain.
Thanks for the update on the tornado watch. I'm on Parmer, kid's at school in Coupland. Thought I was gonna have to go get him. We're probably one of the few in Cen Tex with a basement (we built this house ourselves, transplanted mid-westerners).
Take care,
-HW
By what the radar is showing, Coupland may be getting or just got hammered now. There is a strong cell in the Taylor area.
There is one more strong storm coming straight up 35 from SA.
Yeah, been checking kxan.com doppler. We're not flood-prone, so the rain we can handle. It's that funnel cloud thing that gives me the willies..
Our little VFD responded to several cars washed off hwy 95 this weekend. I'll be glad when this crap passes.
Cheer up!! There are blue skies to the west!! I just talked to my wife and she said the sun is out "full bore"!! Just started breaking out of the clouds here in Austin.....
Lotsa hail in S. Austin. Some golf-ball sized. 1.5 inches of rain in 2-3 hours. Upside, I have never had my lawn look so good in November.
Any major damage? We had several heavy rain storms hit during the AM. Bright sunshine now. What a difference a few hours make.
No serious damage other than my mulch pile is in my neighbors yard now. I'm at my office now near Bee Caves and we have bright sunny skies and light rain. Go figure.
I picked up three huge bags of leaves last weekend and took them to a recycle pit we use. It may be gone after this week.
