"This is a pretty big deal," said a senior White House official, who called the incident a "melee."

Good grief! Didn't the Chileans and the SS have, er, discussions for hours, maybe days, before this event? The only thing I would add to the discussion is after watching the tape of ~20 other notables entering the building, none of which had security details. IF "W's" SS had problems with the security arrangements, "W" shouldn' have gone. However, if the Chileans agreed to allow at least some security to accompany "W", and that agreement was breached, THAT would be a problem. Big problem. We may never know the answer to that.

On the part of the Chilean's, there was little cooperation, and the SS guys could talk until they were blue in the face and nothing ever gets done. That's how it is down there.

That is the case as stated in the article. The incident led to the cancellation of an official state dinner for Mr. Bush and his Chilean counterpart, to which 200 guests had been invited, most of them top-level Chilean officials. Chile scrapped the dinner when the Secret Service demanded that the dignitaries pass through metal detectors.

This is the first time I heard about this. I hope that this is the first lesson in a long course of instruction for the Chileans.
This could have been very scary. tell me how Chile is different from a banana republic?

Hopefully you decided to read the article after you posted that.

We do know the answer to that.
