On the other hand, Reagan was a great host during his time in Washington. I'm not sure what Bush gains by not using all the powers of his office including the power to wine and dine friends and critics alike. Kind of hard to bash your host too hard in your newspaper when you've just left the man's mansion with a bellyfull of his food and drink.

Ah...I think there are lots of news types in Washington who would be happy to sit at the President's table and fill their bellies with his food, and still bash him the next morning. Washington is kind of special that way.
