And every hunter I know says that the SKS uses a weaker round than most deer rifles.

The SKS round fires the 7.62x39 cartridge. It is slightly less powerful than the .30-30 deer cartridge, and considerably less powerful than the .30-06

The shooter had a 20 round clip in his rifle and used it all. When arrested, it was empty

The man was told he was on private property, and was asked to leave. His response was to murder 6 people. In this case, whether or not the property was posted is irrelevant.

I agree. Whether or not a Wisconsin Jury will agree is the question. I was just thinking ahead to the eventual Court Room.

I just don't see how "the property wasn't posted" could be a defense.

More than likely he'll get some shyster defense attorney who will claim "ethnic intimidation".

I heard on the radio (KFI) that the shooter is Hmong, and they don't believe in property rights. Celebrate diversitay!

This is all part of the Bush/Kerry immigration policy where we get to conform to their ways instead of the other way around.

I would doubt PTSD, he was only thirty-six years old.

Old enough to have served in Dessert Storm/Shield. I read one report that he had served in the US Army.

I suspect a Minnesota resident taking a gun into Wisconsin and killing 6 residents would warrant federal attention.

It's not illegal to transport a firearm across state lines, in fact it's specifically protected by federal law. If the SKS were illegal for hunting in WI, it would still be a state matter. Murder, expect on federal enclaves (like a military base) or in the commission of a federal crime, is still a state matter.

what's the scoop on this Vang guy?

I heard on KFI radio in Los Angeles that Vang is Hmoung.

The Hmoung were tribes people from Vietnam who allied themselves with the Americans during the war. They have had a hard time adjusting to the US. Many of their men simply died in their sleep after coming here. They were a simple, rural people who found themselves thrust into a fast-paced, urban world.

Apparently the Hmoung were accustomed to hunting were ever they liked. They did not have the concept of private property and have grown increasingly frustrated by it. When the other hunters told him he would have to leave he seems to have snapped.

This, of course, does not excuse his actions but it does help to explain them.

Possible, but unlikely. Most SKS have a 10 round fixed magazine, fed with 10 round stripper clips. There are aftermarket 20 round fixed magazines, and varients that use AK-47 removable magazines. He could easily have emptied it, reloaded from a stripper clip, and emptied it again. Articles only say that about 20 rounds were fired and that the SKS was empty when found.

I heard on the news he was in the military in Laos also. It seems the TV news and the press initially puts out alot of conflicting information. And they talk about the pajama people.

Thanks for the ping. Very sad. I understand the town where this happened has a population of only around 500 people and so most know each other.

The local news (I'm in Mpls) said that the families are asking for prayer.

Actually the town that this happened in has a population close to 9,000. (considered big by my standards - LOL)
I on the other hand live in a town closer to your figure. If you shake the trees on a good day. ;-)

Yep. I'd hate to say it, but it wouldn't surprise me if there's some racial aspect to this story. It doesn't excuse it in the least, but I would not be surprised if racial epithets, and/or alcohol were involved.

May God ease the pain and finally comfort all of them.

The left is trying so hard to get this to "stick"...

Figures. And these same Leftists are the ones who shrieked that Bush shouldn't "exploit" 9/11...but they gleefully exploit unfortunate situations of this type for their own political ends.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Democrat!

"The MSM and the Mediots (even on fox) tried to represent it unheard of that a semi-automatic SKS was used in hunting. There were guests who quickly correcte the misinformation."

7.62 is .30 cal, the SKS makes a fine hunting weapon.

I plan on using my Kalishnikov to hunt for javelina this season. (A javelina is a mean toothy piglike critter that lives in the southwest.) My friend is bringing his AR-15. We both have 5 round mags, which makes them no different than any other semi-auto hunting rifle.
