Not only that, but the cancelling of the state dinner at the end of the summit. Chileans refused to go through metal detectors so the President cancelled the huge dinner, instead dining with Mr Bush and the Chilean President and wife.

Actually, it was the Lagos President and his guests who refused to go through metal detectors, which is all you need to know.

All I have to say is there are two groups I would have chained to chairs in dark rooms awaiting some rigorous Q&A: The Lagos "guests", and the Chilean cops who tried to stop the President's agent.

What get me is the excuse of their being offended by going through metal detectors. That's routine security all of us have to submit to if we're going to get on an airline, enter a court room, or, especially, visit the President. Their resistance to doing that, combined with the fact that a lot of former Allende supporters are in this Chilean administration, tells me that somebody could have been planning an assassination and the SS did the absolutely right thing.
