Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Amendment I

That means that there will be no single state sponsored religion forced upon people. In other words our government will not claim that you must adhere to the Catholic religion. (just an aexample).

Notice that it also says that Congress will not make a law prohibiting the free exercise of religion. In other words our government will not abolish religion.

It's all about religious tolerance.
