"He doubts the existence of Al Qaeda and questions the role of Osama Bin Laden in the attacks."

Can there be any doubt that this mentality is capable of supporting a terrorist cell?

In September in the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, he wrote, "What they call Israel is no mere military state. A subsumed militarism, a systemic mendacity with an ingrained violence constitutional to the very fusion of its fabric, has penetrated the deepest corners of what these people have to call their soul."

He imitates Chomsky, too.

It is surprising to me that such an anti-Semitic operation could be set up in the heart of New York City.

It's a capital of "thuggery" - a "ghastly state of racism and apartheid" - and it "must be dismantled." A voice from America's crackpot fringe?

Why yes.

Actually, Dabashi is a tenured professor and department chairman at Columbia University. And his views have resonated and been echoed in other areas of the university.

The university especially among the professors is where you find the crackpot fringe. I put much of the blame on the fact that Logic and Rhetoric are no longer taught as subjects. The closest thing we have to a Logic class is Mathematics where, unless math is your bag, it is unlikely to sink in. Rhetoric is most useful because it not only teaches you how to present your ideas in a logical and persuasive way but it also allows you to see flaws in the other guys argument and recognize the tricks when he tries to use them.

The students go in with no training in these areas and are simple skulls full of mush waiting to be imprinted. Once they leave college they usually get real life training which is usually quite painful. But the Professors never go into this real life, they remain in school where their ideas and authority are unchallenged. So universities are hot beds of crackpot-ism and the professors are the high priests.

I strongly disagree. As an alumnus I look at the events described in this article as shocking and shameful. However, it seems to me a renegade department rather than symptomatic of the university as a whole.

Don't forget, Anne Bayefsky, who is a highly-visible spokesman for justice and decency in the Middle East, was a visiting professor there last year (I am not sure whether she is there now). She has publicly reviled the UN for its hypocracy.

And the Israel divestment petition went down in flames after an anti-divestment petition got 10 times the signatures (it was something like 3,000 to 30,000).

I am grateful that the stench from the Middle Eastern Studies department is being exposed to the light of day. As they say, sunlight is the best disinfectant.

I don't understand why people are just now realizing that the Left is anti-Zionist. I used to listen to shortwave radio broadcasts back in the Seventies and the Communist nations were uniformly and unbrokenly anti-Zionist. The Communist stations never attacked Jordan or Saudi Arabia or other "reactionary" Arab/moslem regimes, but only Israel.

It was only after joining the Birch Society that I discovered the bizarro world of America's walled-off ideology wherein Zionism is considered "Leftist" and the ally or source of Communism. This ideological blindness applied not only to the Far Right but to the American Left as well, since domestic Jewish liberals seemed absolutely certain that support for Castro and the Sandinistas was ideologically consistent with Zionism.

Unfortunately, what many supporters of Israel still don't seem to understand is that this epidemic of "hate" has been going on for a long time against countries that stood in the way of the Left's plans. And too often, liberal "supporters of Israel" were among those engaged in these Leftist crusades (which reinforced the anti-Zionist Right's beliefs). What we are witnessing now is not a new situation but rather one where Israel is the only one of those countries still standing, and there is no other country left to attract Leftist hatred. And the Leftist "lovers of Israel" seem so absolutely surprised. How can anyone be so dense?

I can understand the previous victims of the Left reacting with "where were you when we needed you?" There are still liberals out there who are making stupid statements to the effect that until ten minutes ago anti-Zionism was limited to the anti-Communist Right. Bull-hockey. But while these Communist vermin must be combatted, it is most unfortunate that so many "lovers of Israel" refuse to recognize that the beast they are combatting is one they themselves fed for years in hopes that it would eat them last.

Well guess what, folks? It's your turn now. The least you could do is quit acting as if this were a new phenomenon when it has been the same one so many of you have foolishly supported for decades when the target was someone else.

Said Brinkley: If a professor taught the "Earth was flat or there was no Holocaust," Columbia might intervene in the classroom. "But we don't tell faculty they can't express strong, or even offensive opinions."

I am sooooo glad I am out of college!

Tuition $$$ doesn't grow on trees. Many of these students are working part or full time to cover it, or it's their parents who are working full time and mortgaging their homes to pay for the high tuition to attend university.

Colombia, and most other colleges and universities simply don't have the guts to reign in these morons. These "professors" are paid to "teach" not have a "subjective opinion" about a subject or topic. Somehow they think they are "entitled" to the latter because of their tenure.

The bottom line is money. The universities refuse to part with any of it, and will do anything for it. Perhaps if parents (and students) keep this in mind when they decide to enroll in class, these treasonous morons might be spitting in the wind instead.

My brother went back to school at 50. These morons didn't have a clue (and didn't stand a chance!).

He challenged his lefty instructors at EVERY offense, and backed his arguments with facts (a fighting tactic that leftists apparently haven't heard about ;'}

When he was graded down for his opinions, he confronted the instructor. If he didn't get satisfaction, he went to the administration. He was relentless, persistent, and completely right.

It got to the point where he was TA (student teacher) in some classes (a recognition of his talents), highly regarded by his "peers" (the other mostly younger students, and would send the most unrepentant of his adversaries scurrying as he walked between classes (to avoid contact).

I attended his graduation and viewed with considerable amusement the distress these people would show as my brother would button-hole them and introduce them to me as "My liberal Economics professor" or "My liberal Philosophy Professor".

I love to see these people squirm!!!

Are there any professors in that department that aren't foreign nationals? It seems to me that at least some of these people should be investigated by the government and kicked out of the country.
