My husband, an American, is from Chile originally. He said, "I'm so embarrassed!" Then he called one of his brothers in Santiago to laugh at him.

Seriously, though, I think it was some communication breakdown. Somebody obviously didn't tell the guards at the door that these SS agents would accompany the president inside the building. Chile's not like the other South American countries. It's a pretty cool country, and their military and police (paramilitary) are very professional and well-trained, although on a small scale. I think this snafu was a goof-up on the Chilean side, but since the SS are the ones ultimately responsible for the president, they're the ones who can't afford to allow these things to happen...ever.

That's probably what happened, and I'm sure that somebody, either American or Chilean, is getting their butt chewed out as we speak. Unfortunately these kinds of things happen all the time at lower levels, but not at that level.
