Ah, early memories of Rush. I remember the first time I stumbled across him, in LA. I was listening to this guy who made a lot of sense, for a few minutes...then he identified himself as Rush. I said, That's Rush Limbaugh? I had an entirely different impression--which came, of course, from his enemies.

I especially liked his updates, such as the "homeless" one using "Ain't Got No Home" as the theme by Clarence "Frogman" Henry. I ended up sending Clarence a card when Rush announced he was ill, and got a nice letter in return. I ran across it just this week. I know he still does updates, but the early ones were great.

I also remember the "spatula City" commercial, which was a complete crack up. All the unsuspecting people trying to order spatulas. What was it Rush used to say, you had to listen to him for a certain length of time to "get" him.

As for KFI, they then bounced Tom Leykis out and replaced him with Darryl Gates, his nemesis, which was another interesting time to be a radio listener in L.A.
