Orthodox Jew shot in the head in street of Antwerp dies of his wounds By Associated Press November 18, 2004
An orthodox Jew died Thursday after being shot in the head outside his home in Antwerp earlier in the day. Investigators said it was too early to tell if the killing was the first deadly attack in an upsurge of anti-Semitic violence against one of western Europe's most visible Jewish communities.
The British secretary to a local rabbi was shot once as he was unloading his car at 2 a.m. (0100GMT) in front of his home in a Jewish neighborhood, the prosecutor's office said. He died later in hospital, said Dominique Reyniers, a spokeswoman at the prosecutor's office.
"We do not exclude any motive, but so far there are no indications that the motive was racist or extremist," Reyniers said. Police were looking for witnesses.
Yehuda Ceitlin, a local aide of Israel's Zaka rescue services, identified the victim as Moshe Naeh and police said the 24-year old had three children. After he was shot, he slumped onto the road, where he was discovered by passers-by who initially thought he was a traffic accident victim.
Naeh was brought to an Antwerp hospital, where he died some 14 hours later, Ceitlin said.
Police rearranged their patrols in the port city to center more on the neighborhood close to Antwerp Central Station.
There had already been increased security since June, when a 16-year-old Jewish student nearly died after being stabbed outside his school. Days later, a 43-year-old Jewish man was beaten unconscious.
The shooting added to unease among the 17,000-strong Jewish community. "There is a sense of shock," said Louis Davids, chief editor of the Belgian Israeli Weekly. "We still don't know the cause of the attack."
However he said a robbery was unlikely since the victim still had money in his pocket. Davids said the victim was very recognizable as an orthodox Jew.
An official at the British Embassy in Brussels said it had not been officially informed of the shooting by the Belgian authorities but was seeking information on the incident. She declined to give any details before contact had been made with the family.
There have been a series of incidents involving physical attacks and intimidation of Jews in Antwerp this year, often blamed on youths from the large Arab immigrant community.
Jewish groups have said there has been a rising tide of anti-Semitic crimes in Europe since 2000, when tensions between Israelis and Palestinians worsened in the Middle East.
Antwerp, Belgium's second city and a major seaport, boasts a large immigrant population, with some 10 percent of its 500,000 inhabitants of North African descent.
Belgium was the scene of murderous attacks on Jews in the 1980s that were blamed on Palestinian groups.
In 1981 three people died and 106 were injured when a truck bomb exploded outside a synagogue in the heart of Belgium's diamond district.
In July 1980, a grenade exploded as 50 Jewish youths were about to take a bus to summer camp; one teenager died. Two years later, four people were injured when gunmen sprayed a Brussels synagogue with automatic gunfire.
And in 1989, the leader of Belgium's Jewish community, Dr. Joseph Wybran, was shot to death in Brussels.
This was mentioned once on BBC radio news but on all subsequent news items it disappeared. Nothing on TV news. I guess we don't want the world knowing that it is suspected that another islamic terrorist attack has happened on the streets of Europe.

I agree and this time we here in the U.S. should loosen the immigration quotas for Europeans who wish to immigrate for political asylum.
