Rice Resting After Surgery
AP ^ | Nov. 19, 2004 | AP

(AP) Condoleezza Rice, President George W. Bush's choice to be the next secretary of state, underwent surgery Friday to treat noncancerous growths in the uterus, a White House official said.

The national security adviser underwent uterine fibroid embolization at Georgetown University Hospital, and it appeared to be successful with no complications, said Jim Wilkinson, a deputy national security adviser.

"The surgery was successful and she is resting comfortably," Wilkinson said.

Uterine fibroid embolization blocks blood flow to fibroids, noncancerous tumors in the uterus. It is meant to shrink the growths by injecting small particles into the blood vessels that "feed" the fibroids to cut off their blood supply. For some women it is an alternative to hysterectomy. Radiologist Dr. James Spies performed the procedure, Wilkinson said.

Rice was scheduled to stay overnight at the hospital and go home Saturday. She could return to work as early as Monday, Wilkinson said.

Mr. Bush announced on Tuesday that Rice, 50, will succeed Secretary of State Colin Powell. Her nomination must be confirmed by the Senate.

Mr. Bush traveled Friday to Chile for an international summit. He brought Steve Hadley, Rice's deputy and the president's pick to head the National Security Council if Rice is confirmed.

I pray she has a swift recovery. I do know how one can be alone at her age. Seems she should be finding a nice guy to spend time with. Just a thought.

I certainly wish Rice a speedy recovery, but I must say that I am sick and tired of hearing the gory details of the medical care of famous personages. There was a time when people were civilized and they kept private things private -- and when the public respected that privacy.

NBC showing us the inside of Katie Couric's colon in the interest of public health awareness was only the worst example of this tastelessness.

I realize that there is some logic to releasing reassuring details of the health of those in the presidential line of succession, which Rice soon will be, but one would think that she would be happier not to have her uterus discussed in public. Same if it were her knee or Achilles tendon -- it is none of the media's business... And the liberal media is supposed to be big on "privacy."

End of rant.

First I've heard about this...

I also pray for her.

But look for the lowlife Doonesbury and the other scumbag 'cartoonists' to have derogatory cartoons about this medical problem, too.

"Seems she should be finding a nice guy to spend time with."

There are a lot of nice guys right here in FR :)

Seriously, I found this on uterine fibroid embolization here and pass the info along as I had never heard of this procedure. Sounds like Condi should be ok.

Benefits

* Minimally invasive: Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is less invasive than either open surgery to remove fibroid tumors, or surgically removing the uterus itself. Patients ordinarily can resume their usual activities weeks earlier than if they had a hysterectomy. Blood loss during uterine fibroid embolization is minimal, the recovery time is much shorter than for hysterectomy, and general anesthesia is not required.

* Relief of symptoms: Follow-up studies have shown that approximately 85 percent of women who have their fibroids treated by uterine fibroid embolization experience either significant reduction or complete resolution of their fibroid-related symptoms....

* Durable effect: Follow-up studies lasting several years have shown that it is rare for treated fibroids to regrow or for new fibroids to develop after uterine fibroid embolization. ...

Risks

* Catheter-related risks...

* Allergy to x-ray contrast material...

* Passage of fibroid tissue...

* Early onset menopause...

* Need for hysterectomy: Although the goal of uterine fibroid embolization is to cure fibroid-related symptoms without surgery, some women may eventually need to have a hysterectomy because of infection or persistent symptoms....

* X-ray exposure...

* Future fertility...

My wife had surgery for similar about eight weeks ago and we were told that the embolization (injection of polyvinyl alcohol into the tumors) alternative is somewhat risky.

It is sad that in our society the price of fame or politics is no privacy.

So much for my theory on the surgery - titanium foot implants for kicking butts at the State Department.

I also wish for her speedy recovery.

I was struck, however, about your suggestion of her "finding a nice guy".

Before I comment, I'll provide a little perspective about myself. I am a 50 year old, white male, happily married to an atttractive, somewhat younger wife.

That said, I would like to observe that Dr. Rice is obviously highly intelligent, reputedly of good character, physically attractive, financially secure, and famous. Obviously, many "nice guys" (and not so nice guys, too) must find her attractive, and are capable of "finding" her. I find her attractive.

If she doesn't have a guy, it can't be that it's hard to find one. There must be another reason.

Perhaps she simply doesn't want a guy. Maybe she feels she is just too busy. It could be that she wants somebody, but has a list of requirements that are, in effect, mutually exclusive (or nearly so).

We all tend to choose our own situations in life. I hope she is happy with her's.

I think she tried to keep it private. For many days, all we heard was that she was having some sort of surgery that was not life threatening. Someone must have pried very hard to get this info. or maybe some medical person leaked it out.

Dr. Rice certainly seems to try to keep her life private, and I don't think she was the source of the disclosure.

I don't think you were really very off. Pain from fibroids, and the need to take painkillers for it, could have put a damper on her kicking strength. Now she'll be fit to deliver as many swift hard kicks as are called for.

Like I said, I'm sure she, like most people, would rather keep her medical information private. What disgusts me is a media that pries into this sort of thing, and a public that rewards the media for doing the prying.

The same people who are doing this probably are the same regulation-loving liberals who imposed the new burdensome HIPPA act and paperwork on doctors and hospitals, that supposedly protects the privacy of patient's medical records.

A man?
She has bigger fish to fry.
If she is single by choice, all the better to keep her focused on her career and looking out for us.

That was a fine rant. Please tell me they didn't really show that on TV, did they? That would be,sheesh, I simply can't find the right word for it, I think you said it, tasteless.
