No, black bear is not good eating. Now, I fully expect that twenty Freepers will object, and perhaps some will offer recipes, but the meat is not tasty and it only becomes edible when slathered with heavy spices, sauces and other enhancements.

But the fur is really nice.

The early settlers prised it above venison and regularly made bacon out of it.
