To prevent duplication, do not alter the heading. Thanks.

The terrorists in Iraq (and elsewhere) do the bidding
of Brokaw, Jennings, Rather and McNeil and other traitors.

They're better!! They are the best we have ever fielded in terms of skill, committment, and courage.

A load of crap from another armchair General. Troops are troops and they are only as good as their training, leadership and the cause they are fighting for.

I was a BCT Company Commander at Fort Knox as the Draft was ending. I had six cycles of troops. The first cycle was 50/50 enlistees and draftees and my next five cycles were all enlistees. The last five cycles couldn't hold a candle to my first cycle under any measurement; End of Cycle Test Results, PT scores, and AWOLs. They were simply the best.

I miss the draft.

Tell that to the Marines who took back the ancient city of Hue.

This is a very, very good point.

There is no military force more effective than an all-volunteer, well-trained, well-equipped (including the technology advantage), well-motivated, well-led force which is taken into battle with a well-thought out plan.

I already wrote my opinion back to the WSJ and I'll put it here as well.

US Marines hold back NK troops at Pusan Perimeter and even ATTACK the NK, who was well-supplied and DETERMINED.

US Marines GO OVER THE TOP at Inchon KNOWING that they Navy could not take them off in case of as disaster (dodging tides). It was FIGHT or DIE! They retook Seoul.

US Marines DESTROYED EIGHT out of TEN Chinese DIVISIONS at the FROZEN CHOSIN! BTW, it was CHESTY PULLER, the 1st Marine Div, and PURE GUTS!

Dominican Republic, Operation Dewey Canyon, Chu Lai, Hue City, Con Thien, Khe Sahn, Grenada, Panama, Kuwait City, Khafji, DO I NEED TO GO ON?

The US MILITARY is as GOOD as it has ALWAYS BEEN. Serving America since 1775.

Indeed, the U.S. armed services may be the one truly functional major institution in American life.

Priceless!

if they are the best (which i think they are) it's because of those guys who faught at Hue and Chosin Res. etc.
i know 2 Marines fighting in Iraq right now.. and they both told me how they respected and learned from the North Korea and Vietnam Marines and soldiers... those battles... those brave soldiers are their heroes.. and they have studies their tacticts.
so to all you Nam and NKorea Vets.. take the success of this younger generation as a compliment.. it is in part because of you that they are so good.
God bless you Veterans.. and thank you.

That is a nice post to read. I believe Brokaw was wrong to title a book "The Greatest Generation." Each generation and it's military, if need be, will always rise to the occasion and it will be the greatest.

Not to insult gramps, but our troops today are much better than in WWII. They are professional soldiers (inclusive of sailors, airmen and Marines), well trained, and well equipped. They have excellent leadership and extremely high morale.

If we would have had such an army in 1942, we probably would have skipped North Africa and Italy and hit Northern France before it was fortified, drove through the SS like a buzz saw and parked in Berlin before the Germans could have awakened Hitler. Our soldiers of WW II had to fight with what little got past the pacifists of the 20's and 30's. And they got very little quality training before they saw combat.

I spent one tour in Korea and two in Vietnam. The battle for Hue in 1968 was very similar in its nature to what we are seeing today on the TV screen (instant war) in Fallujah.

The big difference I note is the equipment. It is marvelous to see how the troops are armed today and their body armor is superb. However, as I watch the actions of Marines in Fallujah I note the same discipline, care and concern for buddies, fulfillment of mission that we have always seen.

Against tremendous odds, and it isn't only Marines, American warriors have shown the enemy the loyalty and ferocity with which they hold and defend freedom and liberty.

The major difference I note in today's society is the conduct of he media. During WWII and Korea there were regular accounts, in paper and on movie screens, of the heroism and accomplishments of the military. The media was in many cases as patriotic and loyal as the members of the military and the folks waiting at home for their loved ones.

In the latter stages of Vietnam and continuing until today it seems the object of the media is to paint as faulty a picture as possible to all military action.

Hail to the American armed forces of yesterday and today!!!

>>That is a nice post to read<<

thank you, it's 100% true.. the Marine on his 2nd tour mentioned Hue and Chosin in particular to me when he was home visiting.. and got teary eyed talking about the Marines heroism in both battles. he told me of the speakers and teachers at Pendleton that had faught in those wars.. and how the Marines fight now with those heroes in mind.. to never let them down. much for the Korea and Nam Vets to be proud of.

i agree every generation of American Military has risen to the occasion and been fantastic at what they were called to do... and it's my opinion that they are remembered not so much by their success as by their percieved successes - like Vietnam. those guys were every bit or even more successful as soldiers before them.. it's the public who percieved differently.. and they are wrong.

thank God the Marines anyway are using Nam battle tacticts to teach the youngings.. and we are seeing the results. you Nam vets should be real proud of that... you are in fact saving lives because of what they have learned from you all.

God bless you! thank you so much for your service. i know so many young Military people... it's an honor.

My Dad was wounded terribly in the Battle of the Bulge.. 505th 82nd AB. My brother was a door gunner in Nam.. i have a nephew now in 165th AB. i know 2 Marines, 1 Army Ranger, 1 Army Reserve, 1 Navy Diver, 1 Coast Guard. 1 National Guard.. am so proud of them all.

i correspond w/ the 2 Marines the most.... and i hear what you are saying.. the loyalty.. is amazing. they fight for each other.. as brothers.

i agree about the media. we cannot let happen to them what happened to my Brother and you... we must make sure they all recieve a heroes welcome... it's so important. i wish i had been older when my brother came home - i was only 9 - i would have rallied the town to give him a parade. i will do that for these young men.. for them .. and in memory of every Nam Veteran who came home to nothing.. and worse.

I couldn't be prouder of our troops.

But then, this entire generation seems to be better than the 70s and 80s.

We may have another great generation in the making.
