some car dealerships are doing this now in the service department. the mechanics essentially are hourly contractors. they come into work in the AM, if there are cars there with 4 hours of work on the clock needing repairs - you get paid for 4 hours of work.

Its nothing new in the Auto Mechanic world if the books says it takes 4 hrs to repair you only get paid 4 hrs for the job. I've been working this way for years and I've never lost any money I can get most jobs done in half the time the book says it should be done, The worst case is it takes me 4 hrs to do the 4 hr job. The guys who aren't up to par are the one who suffer. Fortunate for me Dad put me to work on the family cars as soon as I was able to hold a wrench. I've never had any formal school training in auto mechanics only my Dads training(he was a part time auto mechanic, and a full time car nut). The ones who seem to do the worse are those who spent time going to a Tech school
