Consider your words marked.
Specter will be fine. People around here need to stop freaking out. I'm not a huge fan either, but let's deal with this and move on already.
Thank you both for the clarification!
He will toe the line. If not, he is history. The other guys on the committee will not tolerate his crap. If they were worried about him they would have booted him already. They care about our courts too you know.
I hope the Repiublicans in the Senate know what they are doing.
Sometimes I think senators see themselves as too much of an exclusive club, and protect their own (and each others') prerogatives before working for either country or party.
OK Specter and committee, get to work and confirm the judges who've been in-waiting for 2+ years.
Speaking of the judiciary, what shall happen on inauguration day if the Chief Justice is still on sick leave? Who shall swear in the president?
Yup, just ask tiny tom!
I hope you are correct. I still think it's a huge gamble to trust the guy.
He can cause just as much trouble as a member of the committee...more in fact, because he would be out for revenge.
Maybe this is all a great set-up against the Dems. We have now created the impression that Spector will not allow a judge who would overturn Roe v. Wade. So, when Spector now endorses a judge (who will do that!), the Dems will go easier, judge gets confirmed. Bye bye baby killing.
Let it play out, I think we are sitting pretty.
This press conference is pretty significant, if this thread doesn't belong here then please move it where it does belong. Announcements? I don't know.
It's big news for many here.
This is bad.
The reply I get from Senator Craig should be interesting. His office told me that they have been bombarded with calls.
I think the Senators got the message loud and clear and now have the capital to do what is necessary to bring these judges to the floor for a vote. I think that they will go nuclear and change the rules if the 'Rats try the fillibuster crap. Let's keep the heat on and change the world!
Speceter just said his #1 priority the next two years is to get Sen. Santorum reelected.
I would think so, Mr. Specter...
This is a very interesting press conference.
Well, here's my problem: He wants the job for a reason, namely, to accomplish his goal of blocking conservative judges and forcing a more moderate judiciary on Bush. Otherwise, what's the point? If he wants a nice yes-man job, he could have gone and run another committee and had more power. He really WANTS judiciary? You have to ask yourself, "WHY?".
So, whatever leash they have him on, it wasn't short enough to make him not want the job, which means it isn't short enough for me.
I sure hope they agreed that they will overrule filibusters (not just vote for cloture), and that there is a procedure for Arlen's removal if he so much as thinks about leaking to the NY Times or holding up a nominee.
I'm not sure if Spector is physically up to the requirements. He's NO youngster, and he had some health issues last year, as I recall, and there were some comments during the primary about how he appeared and sounded at times. The committee hearings, and the floor fights in the Senate, will be brutal..they'll be long and hard. I'm NOT sure if he's up to it...
I have seen this reasoning before. It is vastly easier, from a public relations standpoint, and from simple tradition, to deny someone the chairmanship than it is to remove him from a chairmanship he already holds. How will the Republicans show the political will to remove Specter from the chair once he has it if they didn't have the resolve to deny him the chair in the first place? As for having him on a short lease, the only consistency that Specter has shown is his penchant for turning on people who have supported him against their better judgement.
