A Marine Writes Home [regarding the killing of the "innocent" terrorist]
powerlineblog.com ^ | November 17, 2004 | A Marine

Posted on 11/17/2004 3:30:32 PM PST by snopercod

This is one story of many that people normally don't hear, and one that everyone does.

This is one most don't hear:

A young Marine and his cover man cautiously enter a room just recently filled with insurgents armed with Ak-47's and RPG's. There are three dead, another wailing in pain. The insurgent can be heard saying, "Mister, mister! Diktoor, diktoor(doctor)!" He is badly wounded, lying in a pool of his own blood. The Marine and his cover man slowly walk toward the injured man, scanning to make sure no enemies come from behind. In a split second, the pressure in the room greatly exceeds that of the outside, and the concussion seems to be felt before the blast is heard. Marines outside rush to the room, and look in horror as the dust gradually settles. The result is a room filled with the barely recognizable remains of the deceased, caused by an insurgent setting off several pounds of explosives.

The Marines' remains are gathered by teary eyed comrades, brothers in arms, and shipped home in a box. The families can only mourn over a casket and a picture of their loved one, a life cut short by someone who hid behind a white flag.

But no one hears these stories, except those who have lived to carry remains of a friend, and the families who loved the dead. No one hears this, so no one cares.

This is the story everyone hears:

A young Marine and his fire team cautiously enter a room just recently filled with insurgents armed with AK-47's and RPG's. There are three dead, another wailing in pain. The insugent can be heard saying, "Mister, mister! Diktoor, diktoor(doctor)!" He is badly wounded. Suddenly, he pulls from under his bloody clothes a grenade, without the pin. The explosion rocks the room, killing one Marine, wounding the others. The young Marine catches shrapnel in the face.

The next day, same Marine, same type of situation, a different story. The young Marine and his cover man enter a room with two wounded insurgents. One lies on the floor in puddle of blood, another against the wall. A reporter and his camera survey the wreckage inside, and in the background can be heard the voice of a Marine, "He's moving, he's moving!"

The pop of a rifle is heard, and the insurgent against the wall is now dead. Minutes, hours later, the scene is aired on national television, and the Marine is being held for commiting a war crime. Unlawful killing.

And now, another Marine has the possibility of being burned at the stake for protecting the life of his brethren. His family now wrings their hands in grief, tears streaming down their face. Brother, should I have been in your boots, i too would have done the same.

For those of you who don't know, we Marines, Band of Brothers, Jarheads, Leathernecks, etc., do not fight because we think it is right, or think it is wrong. We are here for the man to our left, and the man to our right. We choose to give our lives so that the man or woman next to us can go home and see their husbands, wives, children, friends and families.

For those of you who sit on your couches in front of your television, and choose to condemn this man's actions, I have but one thing to say to you. Get out of your recliner, lace up my boots, pick up a rifle, leave your family behind and join me. See what I've seen, walk where I have walked. To those of you who support us, my sincerest gratitude. You keep us alive.

I am a Marine currently doing his second tour in Iraq. These are my opinions and mine alone. They do not represent those of the Marine Corps or of the US military, or any other.

The news media makes me sick. If that Marine hadn't done what he had done, that anti-war P**** would probably be one of the dead, with the talking heads saying, "Why did this have to happen?"

I will stand behind this Marine and all of our armed forces. He did what he was trained to do and more power to him.

Let me tell you something...I have a kidney stone that hurts so bad it makes me cry (I'm a girl, girls cry easily) but this letter made me sob.

I detest the MSM.

The best way to "get even" is not to watch/read the legacy media, and tell all your friends why.

They have become blatantly anti-American, and I think most folks who still read/watch them only do so out of laziness and boredom.

Good luck with your stone. I've heard they are very painful.

Update from this morning's Powerlineblog.com:

Our reader Haider Ajina phoned his father in Baghdad for an update on Iraqi sentiment concerning the Marine killing. Haider sends us the following message:

"I just got of the phone with my father in Baghdad. I asked him what is the reaction of the Marine killing the Injured Iraqi in the Mosque in Felujah. His first words were "Good riddance."

"People are not giving it a second thought. Any terrorist who attacks soldiers from Mosques has no sanctuary. Any terrorists who fake death to kill in a mosque deserve no mercy. He says Iraqis (including Sunnis) are fed up with the terrorists and want them eliminated.

"There was much uproar about the brutal kidnapping killing of Mrs. Margaret Hassan. Iraqis are upset outraged and disgusted with her brutal abduction & killing. She helped us, helped the poor & needy and this what the terrorist do to her and her family.

"He says we must stay strong, united and relentless in the pursuit of the terrorist. Baghdad had relative calm over the last few days. People are even going out in the street till 9:30pm now.

"Please spread the message, let America Know that the Iraqis are with us, grateful and want us to stay strong and get stronger so that we can all defeat terrorism.

Thank you very much for posting the update, snopercod.

It's very encouraging that the Iraqis understand how much our brave young men and women are sacrificing for them.

Wish I could say the same for the anti-American media!

Greg Palkot on Fox is the only reporter I trust -- and a very courageous young man to boot.

Thank you for printing the letter, and thank you to all the above-named Freepers who support this vilified Marine.

He did his job and honorably--the only good insurgent is a dead one.

Just think of the uproar against the Marine if the insurgent had killed the reporter.

The reporter is either insane or lacks common sense. The picture he took does NOT explain what happened. Given that the insurgents are fanatics, there is no evidence that the Marine did anything wrong. He did his job--thank God and I hope and pray that ALL our Marines are defending us!

After seeing your contact information, I was inspired to immediately write this email to the USMC Public Relations Section. Thank you very much for providing their email address. Maybe this community can flood the Marines with a couple of thousand emails and letters in support of this young Marine HERO, and maybe they'll get the message and come out in support of one of their own.

Public Relations Section
United States Marine Corps

Dear Sirs:

That Marine who finished off that terrorist did exactly the right thing in the situation, and should be returned to his unit immediately, case closed. The ratpuke media doesn’t tell the rest of the story, and quite frankly, I don’t know why you haven’t moved heaven and earth to get that story out.

The story I speak of, is the fact that one of our Marines was killed the day before this episode, when an injured terrorist blew himself up, and took that brave Marine with him. I am trying to get the facts straight, but it appears to me that the Marine in question might well have been the cover for the Marine who was killed, and so was a direct witness to what had happened less than 24 hours before.

If I had seen that happen before my eyes, and almost been killed in the same incident, you can be damned sure that on subsequent missions of this type, I would make sure every last one of the miserable terrorists I encountered in a closed room was dead, so he couldn’t take my fellow Marines, and myself, with him.

I can’t believe this is even an issue. Get some balls, get behind your fellow Marine, and tell the world what really went on – THE WHOLE STORY. And don’t worry about public opinion…any Genuine American Patriot, which I think are still the majority of this country, will back this young Marine till our dying breath. Remember, the old media, aka the msm, is NOT the United States. In case you didn’t know it yet, collectively they HATE the United States. Screw them, and that jerk reporter who told only half the story. Come on, get this whole matter over with, and get that young Marine HERO back with his unit where he belongs, killing more terrorists before they kill us.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Gray E. Smith
American Citizen and Patriot
