5 shots?? 5 SHOTS??? This guy is no hunter. He's a crackpot taking wild shots he shouldn't be taking. He misses three times, and then hit the thing in the back leg? Someone needs to take his guns away until he gets in some serious range time. That isn't hunting... that's just shooting until you hit something.

I enjoy hunting, but this guy does NOT need to be held up as representative of what hunters do. Learn the range of your rifle, what it can and can't do, when to take and not take a shot, etc. before you EVER step foot in the woods, moron. Geez.

Did you notice he was using a lever-action .30-30 rifle? A 30-30 is really old fashioned...

Yep. Pretty quaint, but more deer have been taken with the "trente trente" then any other firearm. Factory ammo is a little weak since they know that there are some older guns out there that aren't terribly strong. My brother-in-law bought a Winchester some years back which he has passed on to his son, and with handloads we brought the groups from 5 inches down to 2 or 3 inches at a hundred yards. No nail driver but it's certainly adequate for deer, and they are light and handy.

Happy hunting!

But I'd bet the most has been took with a .22 (at night...with a light )

My message to Mr. Privett :

Nice buck.

Now go to the range and get things worked out with that .30-30. You got lucky, and that is not an acceptable substitute for skill.

The loggers and builders have told me that they have seen the biggest buck that they ever saw on our property, and that's saying something for a logger. They said that the rack has to be a minimum of 16 points.

Exactly and total agreement with your fear as well!

A friend of mine is a game warden and he spends several evenings per week staking out a 6 point decoy he places on rural roadsides. My husband and I joined him one night on one of these stakeouts. By law, he can not use a decoy larger than 6 points. But let me tell you, that was the largest 6 pointer I've ever seen.

We spent an hour or so off road listening to folks slowing down, the occasional breaks squealing, and a couple of drivers even turned their vehicles around for a second look. Fortunately, no one shot at the decoy that night. I'm glad they didn't, as it sure felt like entrapment to me.

Bad shooting story for you

You ain't kidding! I'd get laughed out of camp for a performance like that! ;-)

Have fun with the bull elks.. as always, pix are appreciated.
I'm heading back out the day before Thanksgiving, and staying until the coolers are full.

If I lived in a heavily wooded area I can see where hunting with a 30-30 would be a lot of fun. The open sites add a little more challenge and they would work great at close distance. And the lever action would give rapid fire power. I live in an open area, but I can see where a Winchester lever action would be fun to use at closer distances.

Shooting from a stand is for pussies.

Yup, I agree. When I deer hunt, I go out with my trusty 12-gauge double-barrel, crawl around on my stomach. I track and move and decoy and play games and try to outsmart them. You know, you kind of play the wind. That's hunting. };^D

Sorry, couldn't resist. Gee, isn't nice not to have to contemplate that dork in a serious vein, at least for awhile?

I live on 60 acres less then 2 miles from Camp Bullis (Blanco Rd. at Cibilo creek). Now why couldn't this big guy have made the trip over to my place and made my day? :-)

Some of that stuff they light up over there rattles my windows, but I enjoy seeing the helipcoptors and transport planes when they come over me low enough to see the pilots.

That is an awesome buck. Thanks for sharing the picture.

I am in the Texas Army National Guard, and have been at Camp Bullis many times. I work full time for the guard in Austin and know several people working at Bullis. That was one huge buck. Sort of reminds me of one shot near Giddings close to my dad's farm about 12 - 15 years ago. That one had 32 points, and had the same type of antlers. Looked like an oak branch on its head.
