Well, it sure was a nice deer for North Carolina, that's for sure. We didn't have a scale, but a guy at the hunt club (of which I was a guest that day) estimated the weight at 175 pounds. I found that estimate to be fully credible, just from looking at it and remembering the drag...

I was privileged, thanks to one of the members of my church, to hunt some club land on the northern floodplain of the Roanoke River in Northampton County, NC. This is annually one of the top three deer-producing counties in the state, and the fellows in the club tell me this was the biggest buck taken there this season.

And it wasn't due to my prowess as a hunter. He walked in on me, and I saw him about 60 yards away. All I did was point the rifle straight!

This guy needs some range time!

Aside from that, nice buck!

The moment of sadness I got was reading how it took this moron 5 shots to kill the trophy! Sheesh - I'm not anti-hunting but I think after the 4th miss, the deer should've been declared the 'winner' and be left alone. 5 shots to hit something this big should disqualify this guy's accomplishment.

Agreed, especially since the most of the shots are described as pretty routine. I'd be afraid to even be in the woods with this "outdoorsman"

I'm no expert, but it looks typical to me. And with that mass, I'd have to guess it's B&C.

See that wierd tine on the left side of the buck's rack (right side of the photo)?

Typical racks are supposed to be symmetrical.

Atypicals are assymetrical.

A big rack is more likely to be atypical than typical.

Yep, the deer should have been declared the winner after that many shots. Did you notice he was using a lever-action .30-30 rifle? A 30-30 is really old fashioned, I wonder if he was using open sites too. A typical hunter these days, like me, spends lots of money on the latest equipment and he gets this thing with a 30-30. I'm happy for him, good story.

At least they took the time & trouble to track the wounded buck down & finish the kill.

"I'm no expert, but it looks typical to me."

Non-typical buck. The drop tine alone makes it so. Do a search for scoring B&C and P&Y and they will outline scoring and identifying.

A wall hanger it still is.

I hope he doesnt eat it. I am from the iron range and they claim that some deer in that area are suffering from mad cow disease or the deer equivalent of it.

I hate to see the little bucks being run out of the Superior WI area again...

Those big WI bucks get pretty mean and cranky this time of year and run all the little guys
out of the breeding areas..and across state lines..

I had heard about this buck for a couple of days and finally had some pictures sent to me. I used to work at Camp Bullis and there are lots of nice deer out there, no one knew anything about this big boy. He had 35 scorable points and a 27-inch outside spread. Pretty amazing for a deer that is basically inside San Antonio's city limits.

There was an article in the San Antonio Express News stating that is some controversy in how this buck was taken. Apparently it was wounded somehow (Camp Bullis has lots of lead flying in the range area) and some of the workers out there may have used a knife to dispatch it. I am sure there will more to this story in the future.

Privett shot again "almost between my feet" as the buck ran below his stand. He missed again.

At point-blank range no less!

E. Pluribus and Deaf Smith,

Frankly, I missed the one big drop tine the first time I looked at that deer. Plus, as I said, I'm no expert, so I'm definitely willing to defer to those who are. Most of the deer I've seen that have been atypical had a lot of gnarly stuff and were REALLY asymmetrical. I'll have to read up on where the line gets drawn as far as making a buck typical or not. Thanks for the info.

BTW, I think I got light-headed just looking at that thing. I do most of my hunting on public land in northern NJ, and we don't see too many racks like that. Best deer I ever got in Jersey was a six-pointer...and I was glad and proud to have gotten that. Tasted good, too. :)

Sounds like this marksman thinks he's such a good shot, he only takes his gun out once a year. And shooting from a stand at that.

Shooting from a stand is for pussies.
