I tend to think that both Russia and the USA had better start watching China more closely, not each other.

Hopefully we don't trust either. China though also does not trust Russia either. They have used Russia (besides us) to leap at least a decade or two ahead of where the would be right now in weapons technology.
Clinton assured them that they caught up in several VERY high tech areas of the arms game. We let them get Panama, we sold some of our old aircraft carriers for "scrap" (nothing like giving them a former operating vessels even Russia has not been able to make successfully). They now operate major container ports in the Caribbean and LA!
Russia since the demise of the USSR has developed and put in service several high tech fighter - fighter/bombers, developed new cruise missile technology, a new high speed torpedo, new antitank weapons, new armor, new AA radars and AA missiles, and impoved short and intermediate range missiles.
Not bad for a country that was nearly bankrupt 12 years ago. Like Patton said, we should have taken them out because we are going to face them again and might not be as strong, organized, or strategically situated as we were at the end of WWII.
Now realistically we are facing two powers we saved in WWII. Both are now our rivals (or near future rivals) for world supremacy. The difference is both really would love to see us collapse and would never give us the aid we gave them.
