he fights for fair districts and the abolition of term limits have a new champion: the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce.
Led by George Kieffer, the chamber announced Nov. 12 its support for the elimination of term limits and redistricting reform. Long active in California politics, the 116-year-old Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest business organizations in the state.
Although the chamber is not interested in starting petitions, Kieffer said the chamber would provide citizens information on its position to support any future referendum.
Kieffer, chairman of the chambers board of directors, presented the idea of amending the states policies during a Nov. 11 meeting. Members voted to accept Kieffers proposal and to develop a broad-based coalition of state citizens and California businesses to affect change.

Kieffer said a current petition drive for fair districting by conservative Ted Costa could falter if the movement does not shed its partisan roots and gain broad-based support buy groups and civic leaders.
As long as [Costas movement] keeps that image, it will have difficulty gaining traction, he said.
Costa, a founder of the October 2003 gubernatorial recall, has the only active redistricting petition. Claiming he has 100,000 of the 600,000 signatures needed to force his initiative to a referendum, Costa said he would like to meet Kieffer to discuss combining their efforts.
Its up to all of us who want to change this [redistricting] to work together, Costa said. Im glad hes come forward and Id like to meet him eyeball to eyeball to work together on the gerrymandering going on in this state.

partisan roots=grass roots
I support an end to gerrymandering but if the price is shedding term limits, its too high - I'll keep the status quo.
North County TimesPolitical File: Redistricting process marked for change
Momentum appears to be building for a proposal from a Los Angeles-based attorney who wants to take control of redistricting away from the Legislature in an effort to make state and federal races more competitive. George Kieffer, chairman of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and legal eagle for California first lady Maria Shriver, is moving ahead with a campaign to have someone other than state lawmakers be in charge of drawing up legislative districts.
The chamber endorsed the proposal Thursday.
There you are. :-)
Thanks.
Just another piece of the jigsaw puzzle, eh?
