Is it possible, that it was a discharge of static electricity?
As another poster mentioned, if safety guidelines were not followed
(like the ones at the gas pumps. Do not use cell phone, extinguish all cigarettes, do not get in and out of the car and then touch pump, etc)
then it is very likely it was a discharge of static electricity, or something very similar.
