Buchanan calls Condi neocon
Posted on 11/15/2004 7:17:37 PM PST by politicsfan
Pat Buchanan is on Scarbourgh country and has called Condi Rice a neocon instead of a conservative. What is a neoconservative? How is a neocon different from a conservative (in what views)?

Buchanan has shown a lot of bad judgment in the last few decades. But if he's going to attack Ms. Rice, I think he'll be taking "bad judgment" into totally new depths.

I *think* the difference is that a neocon tends to believe in actively using US influence and military power to reshape the world and spread democracy. Other types of conservatives tend to be more isolationist. If someone knows better, please correct me.
The term neocon is used in the perjorative quite a bit.

The paleos haven't had a constructive idea since World War II. Their two big ideas were shot down during the New Deal Era - isolationism and protectionism. Its understandable Buchanan pines for those days. 9/11 however, has taught Americans the age when two oceans protected us from outside troubles is over. How other countries treat their own people is VERY much our business. Free societies are indispensable to America's prosperity and security and that's why the outcome in Afghanistan and Iraq is so critical to our country's future.

Anyone who disagrees with Pat is a "neocon" unless they're a scummy non-white, in which case being a "neocon" doesn't make them that much worse.
Ignore Pat unless you're within spitting distance.

Condi is Presbyterian, I think. Pat Buchanan has moved beyond the fringe and is now officially off the radar screen.

He's a good rabble rouser and everyone needs their rabbled roused now and again. Frankly, I'm sick of writers who can't work up a good head of steam. Breslin is gone. Crouch is good, but still not enough. Brooks writes like a strip mall accountant. And Dowd is just moronic. I say, bring it on Pat!

A neocon is someone who promotes huge government departments devoted to homeland security (waving yellow flags, and warning us how we're all gonna die) but for some reason... won't close the border...

A neocon is anyone that doesn't agree with Pat. Pretty simple.

"[If] you read the Middle Eastern press, it seems to be a euphemism for some kind of nefarious Zionist conspiracy. But I think that, in my view it's very important to approach [foreign policy] not from a doctrinal point of view. I think almost every case I know is different. Indonesia is different from the Philippines. Iraq is different from Indonesia. I think there are certain principles that I believe are American principles -- both realism and idealism. I guess I'd like to call myself a democratic realist. I don't know if that makes me a neo-conservative or not."
