AN Islamic extremist cell uncovered in Barcelona provided finance for an alleged al-Qa'ida kingpin in Pakistan indicted in the murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl, it was claimed yesterday.
The Pakistani cell, which Spanish police smashed in September, had this year sent money orders of 3000 ($5050) each to Amjad Farooqi, who was killed in an encounter in Pakistan with security forces that month, according to the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
"The payments were perfectly credited," it quoted Spanish police sources as saying. "They occurred between January and September, and they were numerous."
El Pais said the Barcelona group had also sent money to Farooqi associates allegedly involved in al-Qaeda attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
Pakistani security officials said that in September Farooqi had been the linchpin of the al-Qaeda network in Pakistan and had also been involved in the kidnap-murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Pearl in Karachi in 2002. He was indicted over Pearl's murder but never tracked down.
El Pais reported on October 31 that the Barcelona cell had transferred funds in Pakistan to the Kuwaiti Khalid Sheik Mohammed, a close associate of Farooqi considered by the US to be the brains behind the September 11, 2001, attacks in the US.
Pakistani President Musharraf had named Farooqi as the "Pakistani mastermind" of the December 25 assassination plot by two suicide bombers who rammed their explosives-laden vehicles close to his motorcade.
