Virginia's Mark Warner for President in 2008?
UNDATED (AP) - Some Democrats think their best choice to return to the White House doesn't live too far away from it.
The Washington Post reports, a growing underground and Internet movement is promoting Virginia Governor Mark Warner as a candidate for president in 2008. His name has been tossed around by major media outlets in their coverage of the just-completed election and the question of where the Democrats go from here.
Observers say Warner has succeeded in the South by supporting fiscal conservativism, gun rights, and some limits on abortion. At the same time, he convinced the state's Republican legislature to pass a one-point-five (b) billion dollar tax increase.
Warner's term expires in 2005. He says his sole responsibility right now is to Virginians.
I wouldn't think that any more than I would think the beast is really a New Yorker.
Here is the lowdown on the Democrat Party's heir apparent and "man of the people":
Birthplace: Born in Indiana, but raised in Rockville, Connecticut. (Rockville is a middle-income suburb of Hartford.)
Occupation: Venture Capitalist (focus on wireless telecom)
Education: BA, George Washington University; JD, Harvard
Net Worth: $200 million (estimated by Roanoke, VA Times)
Family: wife and three daughters.
Another interesting note is his ability to self-finance a primary campaign:
-Spent $10 million of his own money in 1996 in failed bid for Senate seat.
-Spent $5 million of his own money in his 2001 campaign for governor.
Thank you for clarifying the point of his hometown. It makes sense now!
I (as a Virginian, and a REAL one) can't wait for the end of Warner's term.
"which was actually a very fair tax as far as taxes go (nobody forces anyone to drive expensive cars)."
Real fair, that car tax. Only the first $20,000 of a vehicle's value is taxed. Therefore, a $20,000 car pays as much tax as a $40,000 car.
Well, TOM TANCREDO can and will crush anybody if he gets the REPUBLICAN nomination.
Tom Tancredo 2008 = Last Hope to Save America
Tom Tancredo 2008 = "Principled Conservative leadership money can't buy."
Indeed he would!
This may be shallow, but I think Warner isn't photogenic enough to be elected president. He's not exactly a pretty boy. Bad skin.
Oh God NO!! He paints himself as a fiscal conservative but he is really a fiscal idiot. One of the least common sense having governors that the Old Dominion has ever had. Get this - in order to save money for the state he of course picked the thing that would cause the most inconvenience for Virginians, and closed down lots of DMV offices and cut down the hours of the rest. He has had to go back on this of course but the idea that he would think that's a great idea is pretty scary if you magnify it to presidential proportions.
He has a horse-face and his wife kept her maiden name. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I seem to remember reading that he was connected to the Robert E. Lee museum give away...seems the man who purchased it was a close friend and big DNC contributer. I tried to find the article later but couldn't find it. I wondered if Warner didn't want the public to know and was responsible for the removable of the article. Arlington National Cemetary was part of the museum. I suppose his friend didn't want the cemetary too.
Tax and spend liar
Corin-
Do you want to take this one or shall I?
Thanks for the ping.
There sure is a lot of buzz about him running.
I don't think he'll do well however. He won't even carry Virginia if by some fluke of nature he would win the nomination.
The tax increase issue will do him in.
He is not a moderate.
He is a liberal. He was pushing a tax increase agenda since the day he was sworn in. He is pushing the state to take over more and more of the health care sector of the economy. He is only reasonable on gun rights because that's what it takes to get elected in Virginia. It's not one of his core beliefs.
Let's get the labels correct. Warner=liberal. Wilder=moderate.
I predicted on Friday that when the final count is in, the surplus will be $1.5B - which is the amount of the tax increase Warner and his merry band of thieves foisted on us in the last session of the general assembly. Which shows, the tax increase was completely unneccessary.
You heard it here first.
I doubt it. Wait until the fur starts flying when the truth about the tax increases finally sinks in with the public. He won't carry his own (nominal) state.
George Allen would be excellent.
