Operation AC may still be out there. This is the lady who sent thousands of AC units to Iraq plus other supplies. She has a web site and she is a real gem. Her son is an MP in Iraq.

You should be able to search Google for Operation AC. She lives in Maryland I think. I think her name is Frankie something.

This is just my opinion. But as a member of the military, I'd rather hear a simple "thanks for your service" than receive any kind of gift for my service. People sometimes buy my meal or something like that when I'm out in uniform. Honestly, I know they're trying to be nice and I appreciate their intentions. But my pay is adequate. I'd rather they just give me a nod and say "hello" or "thanks" or something that's short and verbal -- not monetary. That's just my opinion.

Now donating to family members -- especially the family of someone who's died in comabat -- that's a different matter. I think Sean Hannity is accepting donations for scholarships of the children of KIA's. That sounds like a wonderful cause.

I wouldn't have thought this of someone who signed up in '99, but I fear "learner" is a troll, alas.

My Children are not denied , not are they "children," in the sense one would call someone "children." They are all above 21.Children are the people who question my motivations and reasons for supporting the troops. I can afford to do it and I know that my family will think it is an appropiate way to do Christmas. So I am merely looking for an efficient way to do it.

List of ideas for our troops, or some of the things I used to send my hubby...

writing paper, cards, DVD's, CD's, socks, canned fruit, ramen noodles, cocoa, coffee, hand held video games, now's a good time for chocolate, paperbacks, foot powder, cigs, hard candy...I even sent a salami and cheese, christmas decorations......the list is endless....use your imagination

Here's a really good idea....Do you have a military family in your neighborhood with a service member in Iraq?.....volunteer your services to them...shoveling snow, home repair...a movie pass or dinner coupon......I would have loved for someone to have shoveled my driveway or cut my grass when my hubby was gone...

Funny you should mention "salami" There is a famous Jewish deli in New York that started a tradition of sending salamis to servicemen when they sent salamis to their three sons serving during WWII. They still have a neon sign hanging in their deli reminding folks to send ""Send a Salami To Your Boy In The Army."

I think they even have a site on the Internet where you can place an order to be shipped "anywhere". The name is Katz's Deli.

OperationAC.com is worth checking out. They'll help you "adopt" someone or apply your donation to their shipments of boots, heaters (ACs in summer), etc. the men need in Iraq & Afghanistan. They're very legit & low overhead...the woman who runs things has been interviewed on many conservative talk shows & was on about a month ago begging for more people to "adopt". Good luck and THANK YOU and your family for what you're doing!

Could you include sites that help the families of these troops? Knowing their families are taken care of would mean a lot to them.

When my brother was deployed to Saudi Arabia, I sent him packages of books and magazines. There were some regulations about content, but he told me that everyone he knew appreciated the reading material. They were very bored!

If you don't know service members personally, I don't know how you would find out who needs stuff. I wish you'd gotten more helpful or specific answers to your question!
