My Mom used to tell us how her mother would send them out to pick greens by the side of the road. How white bread was only for a very special occasion, hence Mom never liked anything else later in life. Even when I was a kid my Aunt told me and my cousin Rita to go out back and wring a chicken for dinner. We picked one and chased it around but never caught it. My aunt came out and took care of it, I couldn't watch.

Oh -- and before they got a manufactured house it got mighty cold going to the bathroom in the winter.

American Prosperity has not been going on all that long in the grand scheme of things and there's no guarantee that it will continue if we don't appreciate it and work for it. Same with Het Nederlands.

During the depression his family was sent away to live with with various relatives (aunts and Grand parents) while his dad went West for work to support the family. They couldn't afford the rent and were kicked out of the house they lived in.

He use to tell us about how his aunts grew most of the food in the garden and canned like there was no tomorrow. The Aunts had limited income and couldn't afford sugar. So when the birthdays came they use to make ice bow cake for the kids.........my dad loved Ice Box cake. When I was young and my birthday was about to arrive my mother use to ask me what kind of cake I wanted.........I always requested Ice box cake.
