The only viable third party that I can picture is one that is comprised of the remnants of the conservative wing of the Democratic Party, i.e. "Blue Dogs" and "Reagan Democrats", and the more ideological-but less partisan-members of the GOP.
Possibly something along the lines of the coalition that Gov. John Connally and President Nixon were planning during the late '60s.

It perhaps had its best chance with Wallace before he was gunned down. The last of the Blue Dogs are dying or leaving the stage like Zell Miller.
The GOP eliminated all but two of the white Democrats in Congress last week.
The Blue Dogs and the Reagan Democrats are quickly becoming obsolete or have already switched to the GOP.

Here in Texas, the Democrat Party has lost so much power that I often wonder if a third party will pop up somewhere.
That's an unusual name you've got! What does it mean?
