Corning man shot during break-in at N. Tier house, investigators say
A Corning man was critically injured early Wednesday when he was shot while burglarizing a home in Bradford County, state police in Towanda said.
State police said they were called shortly after 2 a.m. to a home on State Line Road in Windham Township, where the 39-year-old homeowner told police he discovered Chad Patterson, 25, in his home.
Police said the homeowner told them he was awakened by Patterson, and after a confrontation, shot him while he was still in the home.
Patterson was able to flee the scene despite his injury, police said.
Corning Police Lt. Jeff Spaulding said a caller told Rural Metro Medical Services at 4:23 a.m. Wednesday that a person at 117 W. Second St. in Corning had suffered a gunshot wound. When emergency workers and police arrived at that address, they made arrangements to airlift the victim to Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, Spaulding said.
State police identified the victim as Patterson, who was in critical condition Wednesday night, an Arnot Ogden spokeswoman said.
Police in Corning and Towanda did not say how Patterson got to the West Second Street home after being shot, and also declined to say where Patterson suffered the gunshot wound.
The home at 117 W. Second St. is owned by David F. Dann, according to the Corning city assessor's office. Dann, who lives on Ryers Creek Road in Lindley and rents the house to tenants, was unavailable for comment Wednesday.
Calls to the phone number listed for the residence were not returned.
Yellow police tape was stretched across the front porch of the home Wednesday, and Corning police officers conferred on the street in front of the house.
Neighbors awakened by the activity of police and emergency workers at the home declined to talk on the record about the house or its occupants because of fear of retaliation.
State police did not say whether the homeowner would face charges, and the investigation continues.
Expect the NYPD to arrest the homeowner and let the burglar go. The Liberals running that city won't tolerate law-abiding citizens standing up to criminals.
Another feel good story. The only thing the homeowner should be charged with is not dropping the perp on the spot.
"State police identified the victim as Patterson, who was in critical condition Wednesday night, an Arnot Ogden spokeswoman said."
Uhh, wrong. The "victim" here was the person being burglarized. The person shot was the perpetrator. The idea that you have ANY rights while involved in the commission of a felony against a private citizen in that citizen's own home after breaking in is absurd.
Dimpled Chad, hanging Chad now shot Chad
Corning's about 300 miles from NYC.
I'll be darned if I can find a Bradford County in NY State.
Here we go again. Tomorrow's article: uneducated gun addict overreacts to home invasion with excessive force. Domestic-insurgent, abused as a child and shunned by Evangelicals, unreasonably gets wounded.
The homeowner needs more range time, IMO. The perp shouldn't have gotten away, except feet first.
You forgot Pregnant Chad...
Bradford County is in Pennsylvania.
The perp is from Corning, NY, the victim lives in Bradford County, PA. Bradford County is home to PA State Police.
No, Patterson was the criminal. When a homeowner shoots a burglar, the burglar isn't the "victim." Only a bias in favor of protecting criminals from homeowners would think of him as the "victim."
Thanks, I'll get the title changed.
No, just thought that was going to far...........
Sorry -- I thought you were saying Patterson was the home-owner. Damn speed reading.
NYS / bang / general interest PING!
Do you have any idea how far Corning / Elmira is from NYC? Hours and hours and hours...
trust me, this is Upstate, a RED ZONE, and we SHOOT TO KILL when someone breaks into our homes.
some of us just need better aim :-)
Here in Penna, the homeowner has the right to shoot to kill an intruder inside the home. I consider it a duty. I carry concealed everyday. The article doesn't say whether the perp had a weapon or had used a found object as a weapon. I consider all burglars, armed and dangerous.
