Police use stun gun on 6-year-old

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Police used a stun gun on a 6-year-old boy in his principal's office because he was wielding a piece of glass and threatening to hurt himself, officials said Thursday.

The boy, who was not identified, was shocked with 50,000 volts on October 20 at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School.

Principal Maria Mason called 911 after the child broke a picture frame in her office and waved a piece of glass, holding a security guard back.

When two Miami-Dade County police officers and a school officer arrived, the boy had already cut himself under his eye and on his hand.

The officers talked to the boy without success. When the boy cut his own leg, one officer shocked him with a Taser and another grabbed him to prevent him from falling, police said.

He was treated and taken to a hospital, where he was committed for psychiatric evaluation.

"By using the Taser, we were able to stop the situation, stop him from hurting himself," police spokesman Juan DelCastillo told The Miami Herald.

Now the child will receive care for his self-inflicted wounds and hopefully he'll get the help he needs in order to grow to a responsible adult.

That's the best outcome and the goal right there. There's something seriously wrong for a 6 year old to be brandishing a piece of glass - that's something he picked up from the movies or TV or even his parents.

Obviously the little 6 y.o. heathen was trained in the fine art of hand to hand combat and was probably slurping steroids w/ his Lucky Charms & was just too tough for the coppers to handle. Like, have you ever tried to arm wrestle one of these pumped up toddlers? Scary. I'm sitting here thinking, ''Ratz, why is it that tasers weren't around 10-15 years ago when my little darlins' were resisting going to bed and leaving the front door open & the dog kept getting out?'' (Yes, I'm being sarcastic.)

No, Picard would negotiate. Janeway would jump into the beam so they wouldn't have to feel bad about missing.

There are phaser emitters on the top of the saucer section and at the rear of the engineering section as well. That picture looks like a photon torpedo cooked off in the tube and is venting. Lots of damage to the system :)

Unbelievable.

Simply astounding.

There was no teacher, security guy or police officer who could disarm a 6 year old?

Disgraceful.

It's what happens when you use beans instead of dilithium..

How in the world does a child get so angry and violent by the time he is 6!?

I work at a psyche hospital that has a 30 bed peds unit (I am not a direct care-giver). The kids ages range from 4 to 16. I have also been a foster parent in the past. Things can happen to children that you would wish on your worst enemy.

Kirk would dodge.

That's because in Kirk's day, a phaser could take you out. All the way out - body and everything.

Actually, dilithium just directs the flow of energy. The complete annihilation of matter when exposed to antimatter is what makes things go boom in the ST universe.

Any of them could, but this is another instance where PC and frivalous "victim" litagation is destroying this country. A teacher, security guy or police officer are prolly worried that the kid will turn "victim" and have his mommy and daddy sue the crap out of all of them for "child abuse", police brutality or simply "insensitive" to the childs educational "needs". While the tazer seems to most sane people as a wus move...its what our American society has evolved to.

It's the volts that jolts, the mils that kills.

The mention of the voltage is purely for ( . . . wait for it . . . ) shock value by the media. It's a scary sounding number.

The stun gun has pretty low amperage (which is what can harm or kill you). The voltage doesn't do you any harm. In fact, the old Van de Graaf generators that you touch to make your hair stand on end can put out a couple of million volts - but the amperage is almost nil.

I believe that an nearly identical ring, 320 degrees, rings the top of the saucer section as well...JFK
