Telling The Truth Results In Vicious, Profane Attacks

Article 8: Telling the truth about Sciortino creates shock By Brian Camenker Thursday, November 11, 2004

There is something about telling the truth that enrages certain people. Especially those people who cannot defend their actions. So they resort to name-calling, screaming, twisted logic, righteous indignation and even violence. That's what's been happening in Somerville and Medford over the past few weeks.

Carl Sciortino was able to squeak by Rep. Vinnie Ciampa in the primary with the help of hundreds of thousands of dollars from state and national gay groups. They supplied campaign workers who came here from across the Northeast, and a slick advertising campaign backed up by a huge phone bank based in Boston. Sciortino also had a fund-raising base in Washington, D.C., set up by a gay lobby. Vinnie just had his regular campaign workers.

Article 8 Alliance distributed flyers that told the truth about Sciortino and his past activities. The majority of people have reacted with great interest and, of course, shock. But, predictably, an angry minority screamed "bigots" and "haters." They even blame Rep. Vinnie Ciampa for not condemning us.

Their real tactic is to intimidate anyone who disagrees with them into being silent.

Our facts about Carl Sciortino were from the media and other legitimate sources, and are beyond dispute. Among other things, this man who would be a state representative disrupted a church service with his homosexual lover, and posed for a picture while doing it. His group distributed flyers on anal sex and sex toy seminars on the Tufts campus. They advertised discussions on "Pornography and the Queer Community." It's reasonable to ask whether this person should be serving in the Legislature.

Sciortiono's supporters said they don't like our "tone" when we used term "homosexual extremist." I think it fits. How else do you describe someone who does these things?

The local press has been disgraceful. Rather than demand answers from Sciortino, they took the easy way out: They joined in demonizing us and Rep. Ciampa.

In fact, those who scream about hatred and bigotry rather than allow a debate are showing their contempt for the democratic process. No one should stand for that. People should demand answers.

Article 8 Alliance has nearly 100 members and supporters from Somerville and Medford. Of course, we're not the only "outside" group to do mailings here. But at least we're honest and up-front about it. We have nothing to hide.

A week before the election, we held a public forum at Tufts University to discuss our position. We informed the media and invited the Somerville and Medford communities. Those who came listened and learned. Many people (from all political persuasions) personally thanked us for coming.

The real odious and disgusting tactics came on election day - by the Sciortino campaign.

Outside of each polling place, Sciortino's campaign had groups of thugs who harassed and intimidated their opposition. As Vinnie's poll workers stood outside the polls handing out stickers to voters, Sciortino's people would come and stand in the way, block them, do anything to keep voters from getting Ciampa's stickers. They picked fights. They started arguments. They would scream profanities and vulgarities at them.

Their behavior was particularly ugly when they recognized Vinnie's family. Vinnie's elderly uncle was assaulted and screamed at with such intensity that he collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital. Vinnie's wife was surrounded by Sciortino's thugs and called the most vulgar, disgusting names, laced with horrible sexual overtones.

Sciortino's thugs had several tactics for confusing the voters. They would scream out that "Vinnie Ciampa is not a Democrat!" (Actually, Ciampa is a lifelong Democrat.)

At the polls, they handed voters a purposefully misleading leaflet with Sciortino's picture alongside that of other Democrats running for office that day - as if they all endorsed Sciortino (which they hadn't). In small letters on the back, was the disclaimer, "Paid for by Neighbor to Neighbor Massachusetts PAC. Not authorized by any candidate or campaign committee."

The day after the election, they unleashed a torrent of obscene and disgusting phone calls to the Ciampa home, and also to our office, and also sexually explicit e-mails gloating over their win.

The conduct of local public officials was particularly disgraceful. Many were Vinnie's colleagues for a quarter-century or more, and they publicly deserted him when he needed them most.

Vinnie Ciampa is a very special person. He grew up in Somerville and has always loved his town. I've rarely met anyone in public life as kind and decent and courageous as he is. No one I know would go through this kind of hell, from these kinds of vicious people, on a principle. Most politicians would have just caved in.

It's been said that people get the representation they deserve. I don't think the people of Somerville really realize just who they're losing - and who they're getting instead.

Brian Camenker is the director of the Article 8 Alliance.

It takes courage, determination, and strong belief in ones' convictions to tell the truth. Would that more of our elected leadership possessed those qualities.

Being in Texas, I have never heard of either of these people--but if only half of what is said in this article is true , the winner of this race is the scummiest of the scumy.

It seems to me that some people involved in the intimidation of voters and the family of Mr. Ciampa should be looking at the world from inside a jail cell.

I live near Somerville and watched this race pretty closely. The actions of Sciortino and his group are and have been deplorable. Blame also goes to the electorate that left Mr. Ciampa twisting in the wind.

Conversely, those who would recriminalize homosexual intercourse - and make no mistake, there are people whose political goals include that - are totalitarian fascists. Nazis put known homosexuals into the concentration camps; that's where the pink triangle came from.

How's that for tone?

Homosexual 'intercourse"? Instead of resorting to fuzzy language, use clear speech such as "anal traumatization". When two males born with heterosexual genitalia use those genitalia at crosspurposes with their design, they traumatize and tear that area of their bodies. The tears become infected by the toxic bacteria that exist in that area of the body for the express purpose of breakng down and disposing of 'waste." Eventually the infected tears become fistulas that allow for example, of the passage of fecal material through the penis.

The human body was not desiged to be used as homosexuals use it. The consequences of their filthy behavior are STDs, incontinence, sterility, early death {average age 45}, high suicide rates, high alcohol & drug use.

It isn't 'fascists' who detest, abhor, and criminalize the foregoing disease-ridden behavior.
It's All People of high moral values who believe that the "good of all society" outweighs in importance the sexually libertine wishes of the few.

How's That for "tone"???

Didn't John Kerry say something at a Manhattan fund raiser like "They are the heart and soul of the Democratic party."

Don't remember the exact quote(and too lazy and indifferent to look it up) but most people got the drift.

I don't know about tone, but it is an inflammatory statement.

Sodomy was criminal in this country for decades without anyone being put in concentration camps.

Additionally, nobody in the campaign was suggesting that sodomy be recriminalized. Nobody in the campaign was a fascist.

Your stupid statement is just an excuse to put a pro-homosexual plug in.

Putting homosexuals in concentration camps is wrong. So is homosexuality. Nothing the Nazis did can make it right.

Shalom.
