ATLANTA (AP) -- Two Georgia State Patrol troopers were suspended without pay for letting NASCAR driver Bill Elliott hop a ride in their helicopter when they were supposed to be reporting about marijuana fields.

Bill Elliott

The troopers spent two hours shuttling Elliott from his home in Dawsonville, where he had dropped off an airplane, back to Blairsville, where Elliott's car was parked.

Cpl. Kevin Coalson, the pilot, was suspended for three days last week, and Lt. Eddie Williams began a six-day suspension Monday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

During the June 29 flight over northern Georgia, Elliott, a licensed helicopter pilot, took the controls of the surplus military aircraft intended only for law enforcement.

Meanwhile, anti-drug officers on the ground waited for details about the location of the marijuana fields.

The newspaper said the troopers could not be reached for comment Wednesday. But according to investigative files, they said they didn't know there was anything wrong with giving Elliott a ride.

This is a whole lot of nothing. They didn't break "the law" they broke procedure. Big deal.

Hardly worth a thread.

Your attitude in posting this tells me that you really like it when cops (who risk their lives every day keeping your butt safe) get into trouble.

I sort of seriously doubt that.

Also, most labor contracts have a list of cardinal sins for which you can be fired without having to go through a process of progressive discipline. Theft is usually in there somewhere. (Theft of time/equipment/resources – whatever)

Oh, sorry...glad to see it changed.

It was something about Cops getting fired for writing their own laws again.

Gets me that cops think they can do what ever they want and the law doesn't apply to them . Unauthorized use of government property. I'm Glad they got caught

So instead of 'police wasting money looking for pot plants' it's 'police wasting money to give a celebrity a ride'.

But Gomer used to say, "citizen's arrest, citizen's arrest."

Chill out everybody...these men risk their lives enough...give'em a little tiny break.

Of course, if it were ClearChannel, they would be "currently not in the air" and no one would know when (or if) they were coming back.

I don't have a big problem with it. If nothing else Elliot can cover the cost.
