High school political debate leads to assault Thursday, November 11, 2004 Posted: 2:40 PM EST (1940 GMT) APPLE VALLEY, Minnesota (AP) -- Three high school students, one allegedly armed with a bat, were charged with attacking a pro-President Bush classmate after he reportedly said only gays would support Sen. John Kerry. "It's a good thing to see young people interested and excited about politics," said Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom. "It's obviously very disturbing to see this kind of violence over it." The 17-year-old was assaulted last Thursday in the high school parking lot following a class discussion about the election, authorities said. He was treated for cuts and bruises and released. The alleged assailants have all been charged: one with felony assault -- because he allegedly went to his car to get a bat during the assault, prosecutors said -- one with misdemeanor assault and one with disorderly conduct.

If this man has made a more inappropriate or boneheaded remark I'd love to see it.

Nice selective editing by the crAP.

In the original article posted from a Minneapolis paper, it stated that the three said that only gays would vote for Bush. This kid that got the beatdown said actually, only gays would vote for Kerry, since he supports gay marriage.

Both sides are woefully uninformed, and it probably shows why we have a voting age, but the AP, of course, doesn't include the entire context of the stupid quote.

***.....a pro-President Bush classmate after he reportedly said only gays would support Sen. John Kerry.***

That kid was wrong in making that statement. He should have included IDIOTS as well as gays. =P

Drudge's initial reports said that the Kerry-supporting kids said Bush supporters were "gay." The Bush kid responded that Kerry believed in gay marriage, so people who vote for him must be gay.

Wonder how that clarification got left out of CNN's story.

He said it with a wildly enthusiastic I-know-you-agree-with-me look on his face and then declared that "There are more WHITE people on Welfare!"

Well, duh! There more Whites in the land, you moron, I thought to myself and decided then and there that there was no way I was joining the doctoral program at that school.

As per Drudge, but from the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The SAINT PAUL PIONEER PRESS reported in morning editions: The argument began earlier in the day Thursday with a discussion about candidates the minors had supported for president, Backstrom said. The two victims supported President Bush.

"We were sitting in the computer room at school, and there was kind of a political debate," said Chad McKay of Arden Hills. "Some people said only *** people vote for Bush." Chad said the victim said "only *** people would vote for Kerry because he supports *** marriage."

It still is an ignorant remark, but in the context of the conversation being held I can see how a 17 year-old could say it.

In the original article posted from a Minneapolis paper, it stated that the three said that only gays would vote for Bush.

Not relevant to the crime in any way.

This kid that got the beatdown said actually, only gays would vote for Kerry, since he supports gay marriage.

AHA, A HATE CRIME!!!! Why, President Kerry will see that this is punished to the full extent . . .

Oh, he was defeated . . . ooops . . .

The CNN report should mention that the Kerry supporters said "only gays would vote for Bush" before the Bush supporter said the "gays vote for Kerry" thing. Funny how that is missing in their 'objective' report!!!
