Japan during World War II were very brutal towards Asians, especially Koreans. Many Koreans were enslaved, raped, beaten, tortured, and murdered in large numbers. Many Korean females were used as sex slaves. Japan has invaded Korea in the past, like in the 1500s. Japan from 1910 to 1945 killed at least 10 million people in Asia. There were untold millions of Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese, Philippinos, Polynesians, and Indonesians who died at the hands of the Japanese.

I look at that photo and I see an ambiguous smile. She does not look happy even then. Her mouth smiles but her eyes do not.
Horrible waste.

Both the "Rape of Nanking" and "Thread of the Silkworm" were excellent books. This is very sad.

Beautiful young girl. Make no mistake, clinical depression is a potentially fatal illness. Such a tragedy.

Oh wow... I remember seeing her on C-SPAN's Booknotes when "Rape of Nanking" was first published. She was so young and full of life, describing such horrible atrocities. :-(

I am sorry to hear this. Her work was very well researched and well written. She is a loss to the history field. I am sad her life had become so painful that she felt the need to take this step.

Amazing how instantly the officials often are determining the apparent cause of death is ..... a person commited suicide.
Quick case closed, helps their records.
