Senator aiming for key post wants sit-down with GOP
Chicago Sun Times ^ | November 11 | Jesse J. Holland

Posted on 11/11/2004 12:29:04 PM PST by MissouriConservative

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) wants to make his case to be chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee directly to the panel's GOP members next week.

Conservative groups want senators to pass over Specter for the chairmanship because of his comment that anti-abortion judges would be unlikely to be confirmed by the Senate.

Specter, who is an abortion rights moderate, has been calling and meeting with senators individually to assure them he wouldn't personally block Bush nominees from being voted on by the full Senate.

The senator now wants to go in front of the GOP's Judiciary Committee members and hash things out next week in a private meeting, said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a committee member.

The GOP committee members get the first vote on whether Specter will replace current chairman Orrin Hatch, who is stepping down. Whatever decision they make can be appealed to the full GOP caucus.

''I expect we'll sit down with him and hear what his plans are to support the president and his nominees,'' Cornyn said.

King Arlen is on the run.

While I've not like Specter since the Rober Bork hearings, and wondered what in he[[ he was talking about during the impeachment trial by voting "not proven", I'd rather have him in the chair if the others have him by the short hairs. I think he'd be more of a problem if he was canned instead of working under the threat of canning.

Well, you understand what I mean.

I quite well understand. You are correct that it is a canard. The entire abortion thing winds down to a woman tossing her instinct to love and nurture her child in favor of making her own life easier. We dehumanize mothers, then wonder why they raise little monsters.

Go figure.

Shalom.

I'm a newbie/lurker and signed up just to respond to this post. Stupid? Maybe...

I am extremely passionate about this subject, maybe more so since I had a child 17 months ago. But the argument in which you (and anyone pro-"choice", I use the word loosely) support abortion is, in my eyes, baseless. The only times I would support someone who wishes to "choose" abortion is in times of rape, incest and when the mother's life is in danger. Now, if a woman doesn't have any of the previous reasons she is "choosing" abortion, she had ALREADY made a choice. That choice led to a pregnancy. This is where I get really heated! This (hypothetical) woman had already made a choice, which had consequences. She obviously didn't want to live with the consequences of her actions. Not only is this a matter of morality, it is also a matter of responsibility. Taking responsibility for ones actions!

I believe people should take responsibility for their actions. There are ways to avoid pregnancy! If a child is not wanted, then don't risk it. It’s simple.

By the way, I am not a church-goer. However, I consider myself a conservative. You don't have to go to church to have morals.

Then the GOP better start looking for folks to outsource their GOTV efforts to--the usual suspects will NOT bother showing up in 2006 if Specter is the chair. And they'd better solicit more loot from Planned Parenthood--because the money will dry up, too.

Outsourced GOTV doesn't work. They should have learned that from the Dems

I won't vote 3rd party--but I won't go the extra mile for a party that puts a backstabbing hack into a prime position.

I'm not going third party either, but I may have more free time next election cycle too.

Specter will retire after this term. Nobody has him by anything unless someone knows of some felony he's committed.

Shalom.

At this point you have made an tremendous flawed assumption of your superiority. Your arrogance is far superior to your cognitive skills.

Title: GOP Sen. Specter Vows to Block Bush's Nominees

Recall that alleged Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, upon winning the primary, immediately backstabbed President Bush, who had campaigned for him instead of actual Republican Pat Toomey. Turns out Specter was just getting started.

We now see that the usually pro-Democrat Pittsburgh Post-Gazette endorsed the sharp-horned RINO in Tuesday's general election for this reason: "Before the Post-Gazette editorial board, he promised that no extremists would be approved for the bench."

What the pro-abortion Specter and pro-abortion Post-Gazette mean by "extremist" is anyone who isn't pro-abortion or who otherwise follows the U.S. Constitution instead of making up legislation from the bench.

"Even if he votes nine out of 10 times for the administration, we trust his word that the 10 percent of difference will be a brake on the worst excesses of a second Bush term, if it comes to that," the pee-yoo P-G snarled.

And there are these facts:

Arlen Specter:

Voted NO on ending special funding for minority & women-owned business. (Oct 1997)

Voted NO on banning affirmative action hiring with federal funds. (Jul 1995)

Success is near because of all the hard work we have done, but it is not yet over. The Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Times, and United Press International all covered how the offices have been flooded with calls, but we need to keep it up as the fight does not end here! Make the calls all over again on Monday.

Also note the changes to the site, all the recent press mentions will be on the Why? page, but this blog should keep you fairly up to date on the goings ons.

Mark Harris .:. 11/6/2004 Keep Up The Work

Things are going fantastic over here, as we have gotten press through the Laura Ingram Show, several state pro-life alerts, and countless conservative e-mail lists, but the fight has just begun.

The rumor on the Hill is that things are about ready to break. We just need to keep up pressure on them to make sure it happens. So keep your eyes and ears open. NotSpecter.com also has some great resources that have gone up so make sure to check it out.

Also GrassrootsPA.com has a letter written by Specter to raise money that slams the conservative wing of the party, which puts to rest any argument over how he would run the Judiciary Committee.

Lest you think this is fiction - these signs started to appear in the Philadelphia area just before the election, paid for by Arlen’s former campaign manager. This particular picture originially appeared in the Philly Daily News.

Some folks want women, even if raped, to have to carry what amounts to a parasitic growth in their body. I don't, that's all.

"...what amounts to a parasitic growth..." is a BABY. You were once that self same "growth". Sorry, your ugly view of life is stomach turning.

Sorry... the last thing our Senators need during the extremely busy days after the election is to have their offices paralyzed with thousands of faxes and phone calls informing them of the earth-shattering news that (sit down now, what a shocker), Arlen is not a conservative.

They know this better than anyone. They also know better than we do what agreements Specter has made and how well he abides by them... these Senators have worked side-by-side with him for years.

If the conservative Senators feel they can trust him, he'll chair the committee. If they feel they can't trust him, they'll vote him down and deal with the costs. Hundreds of hysterical threads here on the subject won't make a bit of difference.

I never was. The charge was, in the scheme of crimes committed by BillyJeff, pretty frickin' miniscule. Everyone knew he'd done worse and elected (and RE-elected) the SOB. No way was he getting convicted.

To: hyperpoly8 This forum is staunchly pro-life. If you believe in abortion then you might as well post somewhere else...

Let's see, you've been here since August and you are telling other people they don't belong here? I support abortion rights; and I also emailed both of my Republican senators opposing Senator Arlen Specter's elevation to the chairmanship of the Judicial Committee. If the perception that opposition to Specter is only from anti-abortion "extremists" then there is no chance that the drive to stop Specter will succeed.
