Remembering the Veterans

Posted on 11/11/2004 11:13:07 AM PST by nicko

For all the Veterans, all their loved ones, and all who have supported us throughout the years; as we stand in rememberance of that fateful fall day in 1918 when the guns went silent...a piece I've posted before, I think...

Evening in Arlington (Last line from Taps)

as the last note waifs away, and the wind dies down, there is one solemn moment, suspended…

and our grief for those gone becomes a brush that we pass across our opaque pain, so we may see them once more, before they fade forever into the evening mist…

before some sound stirs this field to flight- still we might remember- “as we go, this we know, God is near…”

Nothing more solemn than a good bugler playing TAPS.
Once, after we had lost an aircraft, we had a ceremony with guys from the wing doing a flyover in the missing man formation while a TAPS played. I still remember the chills running up my spine.
I've heard it a few times since, but the first I will always remember.

My dad was commander of his VFW American Legion Post. His duty was to decorate the graves of veterans every Nov. 11th. He passed away Nov. 11 1986 - I love you dad!
