PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Now that Arizona has passed a ballot measure to keep illegal immigrants from obtaining some government services, groups in several other states are considering similar proposals.
Proposition 200 has motivated groups in states such as Georgia and Idaho. California and Colorado already are working to get immigration measures on the ballot in 2006.
"Since Proposition 200 passed, there has just been a tidal wave of interest in doing the same thing," said Jimmy Herchek, a member of Georgians for Immigration Reduction.
Supporters argue a measure like the one Arizona approved November 2 is needed because the government isn't keeping illegal immigrants from obtaining food stamps, welfare and other social services.
Proposition 200 requires people to produce proof of immigration status when obtaining certain government services and will punish government workers for failing to report illegal immigrants who try to get aid. It also requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote.
"People are fed up with illegal immigrants breaking the law and not being penalized," said Rosemary Jenks of NumbersUSA Action, a group that advocates reducing immigration. "If the federal government won't deal with it, this is the only avenue."
Arizona's measure is expected to face numerous court challenges, which opponents say other states should consider before drafting their own initiatives.

Expect the wails of outrage from the usual suspects
My objection is that these people is that in aggregate they consume far more than they produce, not that they don't produce anything at all. Their kids clog the school systems. Their health care (and only the best of care too) is at the taxpayer expense; however, their pay is off the books, and isn't even spent in the USA, but sent back to Mexico (or El Salvidor etc.) Since there ain't no such thing as a free lunch, those of us who are on the books and work legitimate jobs for a living pick up the slack.

numberusa.com has been making a difference. You can fax your Senators, Congressmen, Bush, etc. and they give you canned letters and it is FREE.
I will oppose ANY amnesty plan by Bush.
Mr. President--How about remembering your pledge to faithfully enforce the laws of the land and begin enforcing the immigration laws? Choose principle and the rule of law over politics, please.
It is amazing though how many people don't have a problem with illegal immigration. They are incapable of understanding the difference between legal and illegal immigration. I've had many people give me the old "well where did your ancestors come from" and I say well my great grandfather went through Ellis Island and then worked for 30 years in a coal mine. They don't have much to say after that. For some reason they think everyone on the face of the earth has the God given right to live in the USA. They seem to feel guilty that their ancestors immigrated here and it was like really easy or something.
Me too.
Interesting site. You are aware that according to the Urinal Constipation that Gwinnett countly has the highest hispanic immigration rate of any county in the USA? (of course consider the source)
I believe it. A few months ago I made my first run up Buford Highway in several years. What the hell happened up there?
Just as an aside I know of several businesses that had to relocate due to increasing crime - they are not all here just to work, or if they are their good intentions get sidetracked.
Let's just build a wall and place our troops on the border ad start rounding up and deporting these criminals.
That's one of those "well why didn't they do that before" proposals....I think we all know now that our government isn't being honest about its true motives for looking the other way, and it has nothing to do with appeasing Latino groups, its far more dollars and cents.
