As a practicing Roman Catholic I can only express my disappointment with our old, ailing pope.

While he was busy being entertained by bare-breasted polynesian lasses, embracing voodoo, islam, buddhism, and scantily-clad dancers in the Vatican, the Roman Church was abandoning it's position of moral leadership in the Christian world.

On behalf of the rest of Christendom, especially the protestants of whom I am one, I'd like to apologize to the Jews for the Vatican's comments today.

The Vatican was obviously referring to Arafat's claims in English to want peace. Claims that were not backed up by his actions or his claims spoken in Arabic.

This Catholic says Shame on the Pope for speaking words of praise for a filthy, perverse, thieving, unworthy, coldblooded murdering butcher.

Shame on Pope John Paul II.

If the Vatican is praising Yasser Arafat... There's not much hope left for them either. What's the world coming to? The Blind leading the Blind? What ever happened to standing up for whats right and calling something wrong and evil for what it is?! This is an open question to anyone with answers... I'm confused! :)

The Vatican has praised Yasser Arafat as a charismatic leader who struggled to win independence for his people, and repeated its support of a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Between this and pedophiles in the priesthood. it's no wonder I have no respect for the Catholic church.

Comrade Arafat--the Vatican's (and all "palaeos'") favorite Communist.

Honestly, the Irish Republican Army never got the support from the Church that this mass-murdering monster received over the years. And this from a Church that wouldn't lift a finger to help the embattled Maronites of southern Lebanon because it "opposed violence."

Freaking hypocrites. Thank G-d for getting me out of that church. I could smell the brimstone even then.

The 84-year-old Pope's message said he prayed that the "star of harmony" would soon bring peace to the Holy Land and that both Israelis and Palestinians could live "reconciled among themselves as two independent and sovereign states".

I guess he doesn't buy into that biblical stuff about the promised land belonging exclusively to Israel, eh?

The POPE , IMHO, is very ill he was and probably still is being advised by a French Cardinal. As you recall, the Pope warned us against going into Iraq. Why was it OK for millions to be slaughtered by Saddam and to develop WMD? (don''t give me the crap Saddam didn't - 400 Nuke scientists in Lybia and Syria using Gas against Black Africans recently.) No involvement with the scandalous US Bishops, who failed to do their job (enough said). No excommunication of Kerry... and a lot more.

Not knocking the POPE, just ditch the Fr. Cardinal, code name Judas
